On April 8, 1997, Ultratech Stepper Inc. announced three i-line wafer lithography systems: Saturn I, Saturn II, and Saturn III. The models shared a platform but differed in resolution, alignment capability, and intended applications. The announcement said the systems were planned to become available in the second half of 1997; it does not establish their present-day availability or support.
What was the Ultratech Saturn stepper series?
The Saturn series was a family of i-line lithography tools built on Ultratech’s Saturn wafer-stepper platform. In its April 11, 1997 report on the announcement, EE Times described a common platform with simplified optics and a large field size, intended to support mix-and-match production alongside both 5X steppers and advanced step-and-scan systems.
Ultratech presented the three models as a way for customers to select different resolution and overlay capabilities. The intended uses named in the announcement ranged from mature-fab production to DRAM and mix-and-match processing with step-and-scan tools. Those were stated applications, not independently verified deployments.

The specifications below are those reported in the 1997 announcement, not independent measurements. The source’s web rendering appears to have lost the micro symbol in its resolution figures; the values are presented here as micrometres (µm) in the context of the period.
#1 Best Overall
- Promote Fat Burning: The Niceday stair stepper accelerates the fat burning of the buttocks and legs through continuous stepping; Persistent high cardio stepper for exercise can quickly reduce the lower limbs' fat and enhance muscle strength, achieving the goal of lifting buttocks and thinning legs
- Work Super Quietly: There is a silent silicone cushioning pad under the Niceday stepper machine, you will be cushioned when stepping, the sound of movement is only 25 dB, don't worry about waking up the child sleeping at home
- High Resistance Cardio Exercise: Niceday stepper's smooth hydraulic system will maintain high resistance for 30 minutes in each exercise cycle to help you burn fat quickly; The resistance will gradually decrease after 30 minutes to help you keep in the cardio state and achieve the best exercise effect
- Exercise Anytime & Anywhere: The Niceday stepper is ready to use right out of the box; It's easy to move to any room with a weight of only 16 pounds; It is an enjoyable workout no matter stepping while watching TV or doing leg training beside a standing office desk
- Space Saving & Easy Storage: The size of the Niceday stepper is 16*12*14IN and only requires a footprint of 1.29FT²; The compact size fits in any limited space, so you can start stepping anywhere and store it in any tight corner
| Model | Announced target | Resolution | Alignment | Distinctive detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn I | Mature fabs | 1.0 µm | 120 nm | Mix-and-match and throughput options were part of the shared platform. |
| Saturn II | 16- and 64-Mbit DRAM production | 0.8 µm | 90 nm | Mix-and-match and throughput options were part of the shared platform. |
| Saturn III | Mix-and-match with step-and-scan systems in 0.35–0.25 µm processes | 0.65 µm | 80 nm | Could expose a full step-and-scan field in one exposure. |
Saturn III therefore had the finest stated resolution and alignment figure in the family. Ultratech also said it could expose a full step-and-scan field in one exposure, a feature specifically relevant to mix-and-match use.
What applications did Ultratech name?
The 1997 announcement described several intended uses for the Saturn platform:

What options and platform claims were announced?
All three models were described as offering a choice of alignment system: a traditional wafer alignment system (WAS) or Ultratech’s pattern-recognition-based machine vision system (MVS). The announcement also listed an optional high-throughput configuration rated at 100 wafers per hour (wph) for each model. That figure is a company-stated product rating, not an independently measured throughput result.
