For heart rhythm monitoring, the main difference is how each device checks: Ultrahuman says Ring AIR checks overnight for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), while Apple Watch offers occasional background irregular-rhythm notifications and, on supported models, a separate user-triggered ECG recording. These features work differently, and available official information does not establish which device performs better in a head-to-head clinical comparison.
How the rhythm features differ
| Feature | Ultrahuman Ring AIR | Apple Watch |
|---|---|---|
| What it checks | Ultrahuman describes overnight rhythm checks through its AFib Detection PowerPlug. It flags signs that may merit follow-up; it is not described as an ECG. | Irregular-rhythm notifications occasionally check for a rhythm suggestive of AF. The ECG app records a separate, user-initiated ECG on supported models. |
| How you use it | The check is described as happening overnight. Ultrahuman says the feature can report signs worth following up. | Notifications are occasional background checks. To record an ECG, open the ECG app, rest your arm, and hold a finger on the Digital Crown for about 30 seconds. |
| Access constraints | The official feature page reviewed does not specify current country eligibility or the PowerPlug’s price. | ECG is available on Apple Watch Series 4 or later and all Ultra models, but not SE. Irregular-rhythm notifications have regional and eligibility restrictions. |
| What you get | Overnight rhythm awareness; the reviewed official material does not provide a comparative clinical-performance statistic. | The ECG produces a waveform and classification that can be saved in Health and shared as a PDF. |
What Apple Watch’s two features actually do
Irregular-rhythm notifications
Apple’s notification feature is not continuous monitoring. Apple says it usually takes readings when the wearer is still and may not detect every instance of AF. Its Instructions for Use say it “is not constantly looking for AFib and should not be relied on as a continuous monitor.” An absence of alerts therefore does not rule out AF.

Apple’s published clinical-study analysis for its Irregular Rhythm Notification Feature 2.0 reports 88.6% sensitivity and 99.3% specificity. The study enrolled 573 people; the primary sensitivity analysis included 432 participants, 140 of whom had AF detected on a reference patch, while the specificity analysis included 292 people without AF detected on that patch. These study figures describe Apple’s notification feature, not a comparison with Ring AIR.

The ECG app is a separate, deliberate recording that takes about 30 seconds. It is available on Apple Watch Series 4 or later and all Ultra models, but not Apple Watch SE. Apple reports 99.6% specificity for sinus-rhythm classification and 98.3% sensitivity for AF classification among classifiable results in a clinical trial of about 600 subjects. Apple cautions that more ECG strips may be inconclusive in real-world use.

What Ultrahuman says Ring AIR does
Ultrahuman describes the AFib Detection PowerPlug as checking rhythm overnight and surfacing signs for follow-up. Its launch announcement says the ring monitors rhythm every night. The reviewed official material does not describe the function as an ECG or establish its clinical performance against Apple Watch.

Availability and terms need checking before relying on the feature: the reviewed global feature page does not state current country eligibility or the AFib PowerPlug’s current fee. Ultrahuman says core ring features are included without a subscription and most PowerPlugs are free, but that does not establish the current cost or availability of this specific PowerPlug.

Which option fits your needs?
- Choose Ring AIR if you want the kind of overnight rhythm awareness Ultrahuman describes and have confirmed that its AFib Detection PowerPlug is available where you live.
- Choose an Apple Watch with ECG support if you want both occasional background irregular-rhythm notifications and the option to make a user-initiated ECG recording. Check that the exact model supports ECG and that the feature is available in your region.
- Do not treat either feature as a diagnosis or a way to rule out AF. They differ in how they collect information, and the available official sources do not provide a direct clinical comparison.
Eligibility and safety limits
Apple says irregular-rhythm notifications are not intended for people under 22 or people already diagnosed with AF. AF History must not be enabled when using that feature. Availability varies by country or region. Apple’s ECG app is also not intended for people under 22, and its availability depends on country or region. Check Apple’s current local availability and eligibility information for the specific watch and software you plan to use.

Neither a lack of an alert nor a normal-looking result rules out AF or another health problem. Apple advises talking with a clinician after an alert if you have not been diagnosed, and seeking medical help for symptoms even if the watch has not sent a notification. Apple Support cites CDC estimates that AF affects approximately 2% of people younger than 65 and 9% of people 65 and older; these are CDC estimates repeated by Apple, not Apple research.
