If Ubuntu will not install media codecs, first identify the installed release and desktop flavor, run sudo apt update, and read the complete output for repository errors. Then install the restricted-extras metapackage that matches your flavor. On standard Ubuntu this is ubuntu-restricted-extras; Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu use different names. A package that cannot be located usually indicates stale package indexes or a missing repository component rather than a missing codec file.
Encrypted commercial DVD playback is a separate problem. It may require libdvd-pkg configuration and libdvdcss2, with legal restrictions that vary by country.
What the restricted-extras package actually does
Ubuntu does not ship every media format component in the default installation. The usual way to add common codecs, fonts, and related restricted-format support is a flavor-specific metapackage. A metapackage is mostly a package-management wrapper: it pulls in other packages and keeps the set installable as dependencies change. It is not a single codec library that independently decodes every file.
For the Noble Ubuntu package index, ubuntu-restricted-extras is published in the Multiverse repository component. It depends on ubuntu-restricted-addons and recommends libavcodec-extra. Those relationships explain two common surprises:

- Installing the metapackage can download several dependencies rather than one large “codec installer.”
- A successful metapackage installation does not guarantee that every player, container, or proprietary format will work; the player and the exact media format still matter.
Do not substitute a package from another flavor or release simply because its name looks similar. The package name, repository metadata, and dependency versions must match the system you are running.
Step 1: Record the Ubuntu release and desktop flavor
Before changing packages, note both the Ubuntu release and the desktop flavor. “Ubuntu” can mean the standard GNOME-based edition or a community flavor such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu. Their restricted-extras package names differ, and repository configuration can differ between releases.
Find the release
Open Settings → About and copy the Ubuntu version shown there. From a terminal, the same information is available in the operating-system release file:
cat /etc/os-releaseLook for the release name and version, and keep that information with any APT error you report. Instructions written for one release can be wrong for another if repository components or package versions have changed.
Confirm the flavor
Check the desktop name in Settings → About or identify whether the login screen and installed applications belong to standard Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu. If the machine was upgraded or had multiple desktop environments installed, use the flavor that supplied the current system’s package configuration rather than guessing from the wallpaper or one application.

Step 2: Refresh APT before trying another installation
APT installs from local package indexes. The apt update operation downloads current indexes from the configured repositories; it does not install codecs by itself. Run it first:
sudo apt updateLet the command finish and read every warning and error. A successful-looking final line is not enough if earlier repository requests failed. Pay attention to messages about unreachable servers, invalid signatures, disabled components, unsupported releases, or malformed entries. If errors appear, fix or disable the failing repository before retrying the codec package. Repeating apt install while the index refresh is failing normally produces the same “unable to locate” or dependency errors.

- APT can reach the repositories configured for your release.
- The package lists were downloaded and stored without signature or parsing errors.
- The repository component containing the intended restricted-extras package is enabled.
Do not delete package lists or add random repositories merely to make the command complete. Third-party repositories are not checked by Ubuntu for security or reliability, and an unrelated repository can introduce version conflicts that make the original problem harder to diagnose.
Step 3: Make sure the correct repository component is enabled
On standard Ubuntu, the Noble package index places ubuntu-restricted-extras in Multiverse. If Multiverse is disabled, APT can report that it cannot locate the package even though the package name is correct.
Enable Multiverse through the graphical interface
- Open Software & Updates.
- On the Ubuntu Software tab, review the repository components and enable Multiverse if it is not selected.
- Accept the prompt to reload package information.
- After the reload finishes, run
sudo apt updateagain and inspect the output for errors.
Labels can vary slightly by release and flavor. The important check is that the component containing the package is enabled for the same release shown in your system information. If the graphical tool reports a repository error, resolve that error first instead of proceeding to installation.

Why “package not found” is a diagnostic clue
An “unable to locate package” message does not prove that Ubuntu no longer ships the package. It can mean that the package index is stale, the update failed, Multiverse is disabled, the release is unsupported, or the package name does not match the flavor. Record the exact command and complete output; each possibility requires a different fix.

Use the package name in the row that matches the installed desktop flavor. These names are listed by Ubuntu’s community Restricted Formats guidance:

APT may propose additional packages, including the dependencies of the metapackage and recommended components. Review the proposed changes before confirming. If the command completes, restart the media player and test the same file again; an application that was already running may not notice newly installed libraries until it is reopened.
If the package name is still not found
- Run
sudo apt updateonce more and save the entire output. - Verify that the flavor and release recorded in Step 1 match the package name in the table.
- Check Software & Updates to confirm the required component is enabled for that release.
- Retry the flavor-specific
sudo apt installcommand only after the update completes without repository errors.
If APT still cannot locate the package, the unresolved evidence is in the update output or repository configuration. Do not “fix” the message by copying a package from another Ubuntu release or by adding an unverified PPA.
Step 5: Handle unmet dependencies without guessing
A different failure occurs when APT finds the metapackage but cannot configure one or more dependencies. The terminal may mention packages that are held, conflicting, unpacked but not configured, or unavailable from a repository. Preserve that complete error: the named package and the first repository or version complaint usually identify the real cause.

Repair an interrupted package operation
Ubuntu’s APT troubleshooting guidance documents this fix-broken operation:
sudo apt-get -f installThe command asks APT to resolve currently broken dependencies and finish pending package configuration. It is a repair operation, not a universal cure. Read the proposed changes and the final output. If it reports a missing repository, held package, conflicting version, or another specific blocker, address that blocker and run the repair again only when the underlying repository is available.
Common dependency branches
- Repository fetch failure: Return to
sudo apt updateand correct the failing source, network access, signature issue, or release mismatch shown there. - Held or conflicting package: Note the exact package names and versions in the error. Removing or replacing packages without understanding the conflict can remove desktop components.
- Interrupted configuration: Allow
apt-get -f installto complete, then rerun the flavor-specific restricted-extras install. - Package unavailable for the release: Confirm that the configured sources belong to the installed release. Do not mix repositories from different releases.
If the repair command proposes removing a large part of the desktop, stop and review the repository configuration or seek help with the complete APT transcript instead of accepting automatically.

Common file playback and encrypted commercial DVD playback are separate tasks. Installing restricted-extras addresses the former’s common dependencies; it does not by itself provide every component needed to decrypt commercial discs.
Ubuntu’s DVD help documentation explains that DVD support cannot be provided by default because of legal and technical restrictions. For encrypted DVDs, its documented path involves the libdvd-pkg package and reconfiguring it:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkgThat process can install libdvdcss2. The package is intended for DVD decryption, not as a general replacement for the restricted-extras metapackage. Follow the prompts shown by your installed release and media software.
Check the legal position where you live
Ubuntu cautions that using unlicensed decryption software may not be permitted in some countries. Copyright and circumvention rules differ by jurisdiction, and a disc you own can still be covered by restrictions on bypassing encryption. Verify your local rights before installing or using DVD decryption components. If your goal is to play unencrypted video files, you do not need this DVD-specific branch.
Read the exact symptom instead of applying every fix

A clean recovery sequence
When you are unsure which branch applies, use this order and stop at the first failing step:
- Record the Ubuntu release and desktop flavor.
- Run
sudo apt updateand read the entire result. - If the update reports repository errors, fix those errors and repeat the update.
- Confirm that the repository component containing the flavor’s restricted-extras package is enabled.
- Run the matching
sudo apt install …-restricted-extrascommand from the table. - If APT reports unmet dependencies, preserve the complete message and run
sudo apt-get -f installonce as the documented fix-broken operation. - After the repair completes, retry the matching installation command and review the proposed package changes.
- Restart the media player before testing a file.
- If the target is an encrypted commercial DVD, stop using the ordinary codec path and follow the DVD-specific branch, including the jurisdiction check.
How to report a failure so it can be diagnosed
A useful support report includes the Ubuntu release, desktop flavor, exact command, and complete terminal output. Include whether the failure occurred during sudo apt update, the restricted-extras installation, or sudo apt-get -f install. State whether the media is a normal audio/video file or an encrypted commercial DVD. This separates repository and dependency failures from player-specific or legal DVD issues.
Do not redact the package names and error lines that identify the conflict, but remove passwords, private repository credentials, and other secrets before sharing logs. A short message such as “codecs do not install” does not establish whether the issue is a disabled Multiverse component, stale indexes, a flavor mismatch, or an interrupted package operation.
What success looks like
For ordinary media, success means the flavor-specific metapackage installs without unresolved APT errors, the player is restarted, and the intended file is tested again. The package index and dependency metadata remain managed by Ubuntu’s repositories rather than by manually copied libraries. If one file still fails, identify its container, encoding, or application requirements instead of reinstalling the same metapackage repeatedly.
For encrypted DVDs, success requires the separate DVD packages and a player that supports them, subject to local law. A successful restricted-extras installation is not evidence that commercial-disc decryption is configured.
