Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” Beta was released for testing on September 19, 2024, ahead of the final release scheduled for October 10. It included a Linux 6.11 kernel and GNOME 47, but it was pre-release software—not the right choice for a computer that needs dependable day-to-day operation. Ubuntu 24.10 was an interim release with nine months of support, ending in July 2025; Ubuntu recommended Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS for people prioritizing long-term support.
What the Ubuntu 24.10 Beta was
The Ubuntu Release Team announced beta images for Ubuntu 24.10 Desktop, Server, and Cloud on September 19, 2024. The beta was a pre-final snapshot for testing, with updated core packages. Ubuntu’s release announcement described the images as the Beta release of those products: Ubuntu 24.10 Beta announcement.
Ubuntu replaced the older Alpha and Beta 1 milestones with ad hoc Testing Weeks for this development cycle. The release schedule listed GNOME 47 on September 19 and the final Ubuntu 24.10 release on October 10, 2024: Ubuntu 24.10 release schedule.

System and developer packages
The cycle updated systemd to 256.5, OpenSSL to 3.3, and Rust defaults to 1.80, alongside newer toolchains. Versioned Rust packages were also available. Ubuntu included TCK-certified OpenJDK 17 and 21 packages for amd64, arm64, s390x, ppc64el, and armhf architectures. The release notes document package and system changes: Ubuntu 24.10 release notes.
Security and vulnerability reporting
Security-related changes included stronger PPA signatures, the apt --refresh-keys command, and OpenVEX and OSV vulnerability-reporting formats enabled by default. These are system and package-management changes; they do not make beta images equivalent to a stable, supported production environment.

How to download the beta images
The announcement linked official Ubuntu repositories for desktop and server ISOs, cloud images, and flavor or non-x86 images. The Ubuntu release directory provides ISO downloads and verification files, including SHA256SUMS and GPG signatures, as well as BitTorrent and zsync metadata: Ubuntu 24.10 release directory. Cloud images are available at Ubuntu cloud images; other architectures and flavors are hosted at Ubuntu CD image repository.
For a beta image, use the beta locations linked from Ubuntu’s announcement rather than assuming a final-release ISO is still a beta. The announcement also says daily cloud images with serial 20240919 or higher should be treated as beta images.

- UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS for compatible x86-64 PCs.
- LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Ubuntu live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
- PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
How to test it safely
- Choose a non-critical test environment. Prefer a virtual machine or spare computer. Avoid installing pre-release software over a system that holds your only copy of important files.
- Back up anything you may need. A beta can contain defects that disrupt installation, upgrades, or normal operation.
- Download from an official Ubuntu image location. Select the image for the intended product and architecture, then use the repository’s SHA256SUMS and GPG signature files to verify it where practical.
- Check the known issues before testing. The release notes include known issues and architecture-specific caveats; for example, Oracular LXD containers require a cgroups v2-capable host and updated LXD handling.
- Report reproducible bugs through Ubuntu’s documented route. File defects against the relevant package or Launchpad project, including steps to reproduce and the affected system details.
Known compatibility and upgrade considerations
The release notes warn that legacy cgroups v1 support is obsolete by default. LXD Oracular containers therefore require cgroups v2-capable hosts and updated LXD handling. The notes also identify architecture-specific PMDK failures on ppc64el. Consult the known-issues section in the Ubuntu 24.10 release notes before testing affected workloads.
Ubuntu 24.10’s newer kernel and desktop may be useful when checking hardware or software compatibility, but beta status raises the risk of encountering defects. Testing it on a production machine or as an upgrade from a system you rely on can leave you with recovery work; use a test environment if downtime or data loss would be costly.

Ubuntu 24.10 Beta or Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS?
| Consideration | Ubuntu 24.10 Beta | Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Pre-final testing of the upcoming interim release | Long-term-support option recommended by Ubuntu for users who prioritize support longevity |
| Support horizon | Nine months for Ubuntu 24.10, ending July 2025 | Ubuntu documentation said support would extend at least to 2029 |
| Software freshness | Beta snapshot with Linux 6.11, GNOME 47, and updated toolchains | Older release baseline than 24.10; the cited Ubuntu documentation recommends it for long-term support rather than beta testing |
| Best fit | Testers willing to encounter and report pre-release defects | Users who value a longer support period over testing the newest release-cycle updates |
Ubuntu’s lifecycle guidance recommends 24.04.1 LTS for readers needing long-term support: Ubuntu release cycle. The nine-month figure applies to Ubuntu 24.10, not to the LTS release.
Support period and release status
Ubuntu 24.10 was an interim release, supported for nine months until July 2025. That support period has now ended.
