Ubuntu 21.04, codenamed Hirsute Hippo, launched on April 22, 2021, with seven official flavors. It is no longer supported: Ubuntu 21.04 reached end of life on January 20, 2022, and Canonical says it receives no security updates or critical bug fixes. Archived ISO files remain available, but downloading one does not make it safe for everyday use.
What was new in Ubuntu 21.04?
Canonical’s April 2021 release announcement highlighted Active Directory integration with Group Policy. Administrators could use it to manage password policies, access control, and selected desktop settings.
The release was based on Linux kernel 5.11. The announcement also listed GCC 10.3.0, glibc 2.33, and OpenSSL 1.1.1. These are the versions reported at launch in 2021, not recommendations for a current system. The Ubuntu Release Team said flavors releasing with 21.04 would receive maintenance updates for nine months.
Ubuntu 21.04 official flavors
Alongside the main Ubuntu release, the Ubuntu Release Team announced seven flavors. Their desktop environments and intended workflows help explain how they differed; current Ubuntu flavor descriptions offer broad orientation, not a complete feature-by-feature account of the 2021 images.

For the exact desktop versions, applications, and changes in a particular flavor’s 21.04 image, consult that flavor’s historical release notes. The broad descriptions above should not be read as a complete specification of the 2021 releases.
Is Ubuntu 21.04 still supported?
No. The Ubuntu project lists January 20, 2022 as Ubuntu 21.04’s end-of-life date. Canonical’s upgrader notice warns: “You will not receive security updates or critical bugfixes.” A system still running 21.04 therefore lacks ongoing security maintenance and critical bug fixes.

Can I still download Ubuntu 21.04?
Yes. Ubuntu’s old-releases archive lists the 21.04 desktop and live-server ISO files, including ubuntu-21.04-desktop-amd64.iso and ubuntu-21.04-live-server-amd64.iso, as well as checksum files and other artifacts. These are archived images, not current downloads or supported installations.
- The desktop image can be tried before permanent installation.
- The live-server image does not install a graphical interface.
- The archive also links an image-burning guide for creating installation media.
Use an archived image only when you specifically need this historical release, such as for a controlled test environment. For a current installation, choose a supported Ubuntu release and follow the current download and upgrade guidance. The available official guidance cited here does not establish a direct upgrade path from 21.04 to a particular supported version, so check current instructions before migrating.
