The UniFi AI Dome (UVC-AI-Dome-B) is a 4K PoE security camera with face and license-plate recognition listed as supported features. Ubiquiti says UniFi edge AI analysis happens on premises, either on the camera or through optional accessories, rather than requiring video to be sent to the cloud. The camera is priced at $399 on Ubiquiti’s US store; whether its AI is useful for a particular site depends on camera placement, lighting, distance and the scene being monitored.
What the AI Dome does—and where recognition runs
Ubiquiti lists both Face Recognition and License Plate Recognition among the AI Dome’s supported capabilities. Its help center says: “UniFi’s edge AI processing takes place entirely on-premises—either directly on the camera or via optional accessories like the AI Port or AI Key—so your video never needs to be sent to the cloud for analysis.” The manufacturer’s statement describes where analysis happens; it does not establish that every feature runs on the camera in every UniFi setup.
StorageReview’s March 24, 2026 review describes the AI Dome as handling face and license-plate recognition on-device, with a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 processor. Neither the product specifications nor that review provides a controlled accuracy rate across different distances, lighting conditions, plate formats or mounting angles. Treat recognition as a supported function, not a guarantee that every face or plate will be captured correctly.

Will it identify a license plate at night?
The 40 m (131 ft) IR figure is the camera’s specified night-vision range, not a published license-plate recognition distance. Ubiquiti’s specifications and the cited review do not establish a maximum distance at which the camera can reliably identify plates at night. Recognition depends on more than whether a subject is illuminated: distance, motion, plate format, camera angle and the amount of detail in the captured image all matter.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning 4K Clarity: 8MP sensor (3840 x 2160) with 30 FPS for sharp detail and smooth playback
- AI Smart Detection: Built-in AI detects people, vehicles, animals, faces, and license plates
- Long-Range Night Vision: Integrated IR LEDs provide up to 30m (98 ft) of visibility in the dark
- Rugged Build: IK10 vandal resistance, IP66 weatherproof aluminum housing
- Flexible Mounting: Ceiling and wall mounts included; optional gang box and flush mounts available
The AI Dome has a fixed lens and no optical zoom. It is a more natural fit for a defined entrance, storefront or parking approach than for reading plates far across a large lot. For distant or fast-moving vehicles, compare a purpose-built LPR camera or a zoom-equipped model and evaluate the framing and capture requirements for the actual scene.
Where the AI Dome fits—and how it compares
At $399 on Ubiquiti’s US store, the AI Dome is positioned between the G6 Dome and G6 Pro, according to StorageReview. Its appeal is combining 4K imaging and supported edge AI recognition in a fixed-lens camera. The G6 Dome has a shorter stated IR range; the AI Dome’s range is 40 m versus 30 m for the G6 Dome. The cited specifications do not provide enough comparable detail to make a complete feature-by-feature or total-cost comparison with the G6 Pro or AI LPR.

- Powered by power over ethernet (PoE) lets you have less wires to deal with when setting up your camera
- The built-in microphone and speaker lets you hear and speak through the camera
- Get spot light protection day and night with the built in infrared LEDs
- Wireless communication technology: ir
- Consider it for: entrances, corporate lobbies, retail storefronts and parking-lot approaches where local metadata and smart alerts are useful.
- Look beyond it when: you need optical zoom or plate capture at a substantial distance. A wide fixed view may cover an area, but it cannot optically magnify a distant vehicle.
- Budget for installation: the mount, Ethernet cabling, storage and any outdoor surge protection add to the camera’s listed price.
Power, mounting and storage
PoE and cable
The AI Dome uses standard PoE and draws up to 10 W according to Ubiquiti’s specifications. Check that the selected switch or injector provides compatible PoE and enough available power for the camera; the cited specifications do not name a required switch model. The camera has a GbE RJ45 connection, so plan an Ethernet run to the installation point. For outdoor runs, account for surge protection and the exposure of the cable route.

Mounting and environmental protection
Ubiquiti lists arm, ceiling, pendant, wall and junction-box mounting options. The camera’s IP66 and IK10 ratings indicate its specified weather and tamper resistance, but the right mount and installation still depend on the surface and location. The US store lists optional Dual Mount ($59), Flush Mount ($15), Weather Shield ($15), Gang Box Mounting Plate ($39) and Junction Box ($49). Prices are the current listed US amounts in the cited store and may change.

On-camera storage
The MicroSD slot provides an option for camera-side storage expansion. Ubiquiti’s US store lists the following card capacities and prices:
| Capacity | Listed US price |
|---|---|
| 128 GB | $69 |
| 256 GB | $120 |
| 512 GB | $199 |
| 1 TB | $359 |
These are store-listed card options, not a stated estimate of recording duration. Retention will depend on recording settings and activity; the cited specifications do not state how many days each capacity holds.

Is the UniFi AI Dome worth $399?
The AI Dome makes the strongest case when you need a fixed-view 4K camera with supported on-premises face and plate recognition, and your scene is close enough to fit its fixed lens. Its standard PoE, 10 W maximum draw, MicroSD expansion and IP66/IK10 enclosure are useful installation characteristics. If reliable identification of distant or fast-moving plates is the main requirement, the absence of optical zoom and any published recognition-distance benchmark makes a purpose-built LPR or zoom camera the more appropriate comparison.
