Ubicloud and Spinifex are both open-source cloud platforms, but they solve different deployment problems. Ubicloud offers managed cloud services and self-hosting on leased bare-metal infrastructure; Spinifex is designed to bring AWS-compatible services to hardware an organization operates, including on-premises, edge, and disconnected sites. The better fit depends on where your hardware runs, how much AWS API compatibility you need, and who will operate databases and storage.
How Ubicloud and Spinifex differ
The key distinction is deployment context, not a universal ranking. Ubicloud combines a managed service with a self-hosted option built around bare-metal infrastructure leased from providers. Spinifex focuses on self-hosted deployments on customer-operated hardware, with an additional hosted option on partner Neocloud infrastructure. Those approaches affect control, connectivity, staffing, and migration work.
| Decision area | Ubicloud | Spinifex |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and infrastructure | Managed service or self-hosting on infrastructure from bare-metal providers, according to Ubicloud’s About page. | Self-hosting on customer hardware or a hosted environment on partner Neocloud infrastructure, according to Mulga’s Spinifex product page. |
| AWS API compatibility | Ubicloud describes its own interface; the vendor comparison says it does not expose the AWS API directly. See the Ubicloud comparison. | Mulga advertises AWS-compatible APIs and use of AWS CLI, SDK, and Terraform workflows with a new endpoint. Its current product page states 381 AWS API actions; this is a vendor-published count, not an independent audit. See the Spinifex product page. |
| Disconnected operation | The consulted Ubicloud materials do not establish an air-gapped mode. | Mulga says Spinifex can operate fully offline without an external control-plane dependency. See the Spinifex product page. |
| Database offering | Lists managed Postgres. See the Ubicloud About page. | Lists an RDS API. API compatibility alone does not establish that the platform provides the same managed database service or operational guarantees. See the Spinifex product page. |
| Storage design | Block storage is described as non-replicated. See the Ubicloud About page. | Describes replicated block volumes and erasure-coded object storage. See the Spinifex product page. |
Choose based on where you need the cloud to run
Choose Ubicloud when a managed path matters
Ubicloud is a candidate if you want a provider-operated service or want to self-host while relying on infrastructure supplied by bare-metal providers. Its About page names Hetzner, OVH, Leaseweb, and AWS Bare Metal among the providers it uses. Ubicloud lists compute, block storage, networking, managed Postgres, Kubernetes, AI inference, and IAM.

Ubicloud advertises cloud-spend reductions of “3–10x” on its About page. That is the company’s claim, not an independently verified comparison; assess your own workload and total operating costs rather than treating the figure as a guaranteed saving.
#1 Best Overall
Choose Spinifex when workloads must run on your hardware
Spinifex is aimed at organizations that want cloud-style services on hardware they operate, including on-premises and edge environments. Mulga also describes a hosted option provisioned on partner Neocloud infrastructure. The choice between those paths affects who controls the physical environment and who is responsible for keeping it available.
Mulga’s product page lists EC2, EBS, S3, VPC, IAM, ALB/NLB, EKS, ECR, ECS, and RDS as available. These are vendor-listed services; confirm that the current release supports the specific APIs, workflows, and behaviors your applications require.

Evaluate AWS compatibility as a migration requirement
Spinifex advertises AWS-compatible APIs and says existing AWS CLI, SDK, and Terraform workflows can target a new endpoint. The product page’s figure of 381 AWS API actions is Mulga’s stated compatibility count, accessed October 7, 2026—not an independently audited measure of coverage. “AWS-compatible” should not be read as proof that every AWS service, API detail, or operational behavior is interchangeable.

That may mean adapting tooling or application integrations built specifically around AWS APIs. Account for disconnected operation and control-plane dependencies
Spinifex states that connectivity is optional and that it has no external control-plane dependency, positioning it for offline or disconnected deployments. In the March 31, 2026 launch announcement, Mulga co-founder and CTO Ben Duncan described why reach-back can fail in environments with lost or disrupted links. This is the vendor’s rationale, not an independent operational assessment.
The Ubicloud materials cited here do not establish an air-gapped deployment mode. That absence is not proof that such a deployment is impossible; it means organizations with strict disconnection requirements should confirm the design directly before relying on it.
Separate database API compatibility from database operations
Ubicloud lists managed Postgres, which indicates a managed database offering in its service portfolio. Confirm the current service’s supported versions, backup and recovery process, availability commitments, and operational responsibilities for your intended deployment.
Spinifex lists an RDS API among its services. An API surface does not by itself establish that Spinifex supplies an equivalent managed relational database, nor does it define who handles patching, backups, failover, or recovery. Treat database behavior and responsibility boundaries as separate questions from API compatibility.

Compare storage by failure behavior, not labels
Ubicloud describes its block storage as non-replicated. Spinifex describes Viperblock as providing replicated block volumes with NVMe caching, and Predastore as providing erasure-coded object storage. These are different designs, but the descriptions alone do not establish equivalent durability, performance, or recovery outcomes.
For each platform, check the current documentation for failure domains, replication or coding policy, recovery procedures, performance characteristics, and the operational work required to maintain storage. Match those details to the consequences of losing a host, disk, or site for your workload.
Check Spinifex’s release scope and licensing before deployment
Spinifex’s March 31, 2026 announcement for version 1.0.0 identified EC2-compatible compute, EBS-compatible block storage, and S3-compatible object storage as its initial services, with QEMU/KVM compute, storage snapshots and replication, and object-storage erasure coding. The current product page lists a broader service surface, so the 1.0.0 announcement is a dated launch description, not the full current feature list.

Review the license and your intended use with appropriate legal guidance; the product page does not replace advice about how a license applies to a particular deployment.
Make the decision with a workload-specific checklist
- Set the location requirement: Decide whether the cloud must run on customer-owned hardware, on leased bare metal, as a managed service, or across disconnected sites.
- List required AWS services and calls: For Spinifex, validate the precise APIs and workflows rather than relying on a headline compatibility count. For Ubicloud, account for its own interface.
- Assign operational ownership: Identify who will maintain hosts, networking, control-plane components, databases, backups, and storage recovery.
- Define storage recovery targets: Compare documented durability and failure recovery with the impact of downtime or data loss in your environment.
- Validate a representative deployment: Test the services and failure scenarios your applications depend on using the platform’s current release documentation.
- Review licensing and hosting terms: Check the current terms for the deployment model you intend to use.
Which one fits?
Ubicloud is the more natural starting point when you want a managed option or self-hosting built on leased bare-metal infrastructure, and its listed managed Postgres service is relevant to database needs. Spinifex is the more natural starting point when running AWS-compatible cloud services on your own hardware or supporting disconnected sites is central. Neither description settles cost, performance, reliability, or total operating burden for a particular workload; those require current documentation and deployment-specific validation.
