No—India is not currently listed as subject to the U.S. visa-bond requirement. The U.S. Department of State’s country list was last updated October 2, 2026. The rule concerns certain B-1/B-2 applicants traveling on passports issued by listed countries. For a covered applicant, $20,000 is the highest of three possible bond amounts—not an automatic deposit for everyone.
Does the $20,000 visa-bond rule apply to Indian citizens?
No, not under the current State Department list. India does not appear among the nationalities whose citizens or nationals traveling on passports issued by those countries may be required to post a bond. The requirement applies to covered applicants wherever they apply, if they are otherwise eligible for a B-1/B-2 visa. Do not submit a bond merely because you are applying for a U.S. visa from India.
The list is time-sensitive and may change. Check the State Department’s Countries Subject to Visa Bonds page again before making travel or payment decisions; it was last updated October 2, 2026.

For an applicant covered by the rule, a consular officer may set a bond at $10,000, $15,000, or $20,000. The officer determines the amount at the visa interview. The $20,000 figure is therefore the highest possible amount, not a flat fee or an amount every applicant must pay.

A bond does not guarantee visa issuance. Do not pay in advance: submit DHS Form I-352 only if a consular officer directs you to do so, and make payment through the direct Pay.gov link provided in those instructions. The State Department warns against paying through other websites.

If an officer requires a bond: payment and travel conditions
Who pays and how
The bond is paid in U.S. dollars. A third party may provide the money, including someone outside the applicant’s home country, but the payer’s name must match the obligor named on Form I-352. The obligor is the person eligible for a refund if the bond terms are met, and bears any exchange-rate fluctuations.
Where the traveler must enter and depart
Bond holders must enter and leave through designated commercial air ports, including CBP preclearance locations. The State Department excludes charter air, general aviation, land, and sea ports. A breach of bond terms can result in forfeiture; DHS refers suspected breaches to USCIS for a determination.

When the bond is returned
The State Department says a bond is returned automatically in listed situations when the traveler meets its terms. DHS’s Arrival and Departure Information System records stay and departure information used for this process. Check the official instructions for the conditions applicable to your case.

The State Department says the program is under INA Section 221(g)(3), established by a Final Rule issued August 3, 2026. It says the overstay rates used are B-1/B-2 rates from DHS’s Entry/Exit Overstay Report. The country list and procedures are subject to change, so rely on the linked State Department page for the latest status and instructions.
