The latest U.S. data-center figures describe several different milestones—not one all-in investment total. The Federal Reserve counted more than $900 billion in announced project plans through September 2025, most of which had not broken ground; the White House reported that data-center structures investment grew 20.1% in 2025, while structures represented just 0.13% of GDP. The distinction matters: plans are not completed spending, and building construction is not the full cost of the servers and other equipment inside a facility.

What is the new U.S. data-center investment milestone?

There are three useful milestones, each measuring something different:

  • A statistical milestone: The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) said its 2025 annual update would introduce data on business investment in data centers. It cited sharp growth in construction for facilities serving cloud computing, artificial intelligence, networking, and data storage. The announcement did not publish a single total for current data-center investment. BEA’s September 15, 2025 announcement explains the change.
  • A project-plans milestone: Federal Reserve researchers estimated almost $300 billion in new data-center plans in 2024 and more than $900 billion through September 2025. Most of those plans had not yet broken ground. These are project plans, not an amount already spent or built. See the Federal Reserve working paper.
  • A measured growth milestone: The White House’s 2026 Economic Report said investment in data-center structures grew 20.1% in 2025. The same report put data-center construction at 0.13% of GDP and its contribution to real GDP growth at about 0.03 percentage point. These figures cover structures, not all data-center equipment. See the 2026 Economic Report of the President.

So the headline’s “milestone” is best understood as a combination of rapidly growing project plans, strong growth in structures investment, and improved official measurement—not a single confirmed sum of money already invested.

How much has the U.S. actually invested in data centers?

There is no single figure among these sources that captures total realized U.S. spending on data centers, including buildings, installed equipment, and related infrastructure. The Federal Reserve’s project-level estimates track plans and use them to estimate aggregate investment, but the more-than-$900-billion figure is not actual expenditure. Plans can be delayed, revised, canceled, or never built.

The Federal Reserve’s researchers also projected a mean annualized data-center investment rate of $370 billion by 2026 Q2. That is a conditional model forecast, not a confirmed spending total. It depends on the future flow of project plans, and the researchers’ 2027 scenarios vary widely when assumptions about future plans change. The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report provides broader context on business investment linked to AI infrastructure.

For a later, narrower construction indicator, Tom’s Hardware reported on October 6, 2026 that private data-center building construction spending had reached an $84.95 billion annualized pace in August 2026, compared with $49.05 billion a year earlier. This is a secondary report of Census construction-spending tables, not a cumulative total or a measure of all data-center investment; its scope excludes racks and servers. Read it as a building-construction pace, not as the value of all projects or equipment. Tom’s Hardware’s report describes the figures.

What do the data-center figures include?

Plans and forecasts

Project plans indicate an intended pipeline of activity. They can help researchers estimate where investment may be headed, but they do not establish that construction has begun, that equipment has been installed, or that the full planned amount will be spent. A forecast adds another layer: it is a model-based estimate conditional on assumptions, rather than an observed result.

Structures and construction

Structures figures concern the buildings and related construction used to house data-center operations. They are meaningful indicators of construction activity, but they do not encompass the entire cost of making a data center operational. A server rack cabinet is physical infrastructure inside a facility; the building measure should not be read as including the racks or servers placed within it.

Equipment and the wider footprint

Computers, servers, and other installed equipment are distinct from structures. Software and other spending connected with data-center operations are also not captured simply by a building-construction figure. The BEA’s description covers facilities supporting cloud computing, AI, networking, and storage, while the White House GDP figures specifically concern structures. Those categories should not be added together or treated as interchangeable without a consistent measure and scope.

How much do data centers contribute to GDP?

The White House’s 2026 Economic Report gives two complementary figures for 2025: data-center construction was 0.13% of GDP, and data-center structures contributed about 0.03 percentage point to real GDP growth. The report’s structures measure excludes installed computer equipment. The 20.1% growth rate therefore signals rapid expansion in this category, while the GDP share and growth contribution show its scale in the broader economy.

A growth rate and an economic contribution answer different questions. A category can grow quickly from a relatively small base and still account for a modest share of GDP or add a limited number of percentage points to overall growth. These figures describe construction structures, not the full economic footprint of AI or data centers.

How to read new data-center investment claims

  • Check the measure: Is the number a project plan, a forecast, construction spending, structures investment, or equipment spending?
  • Check the period: A figure for plans through September 2025 is not directly comparable to a construction-spending pace in August 2026.
  • Check whether it is realized: A planned project may not have broken ground; a forecast is not an observed total.
  • Check what is inside the boundary: Buildings, servers, racks, software, and wider AI infrastructure are not automatically included in the same statistic.
  • Check the GDP wording: A share of GDP is not the same as a contribution to GDP growth.
