Soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, assembled and flew an armed Orqa MRM2-10 drone during a live-fire exercise at Grafenwoehr Training Area in Germany on September 30, 2026, according to Stars and Stripes. “In-house” has a specific limit here: soldiers assembled the aircraft from manufacturer-supplied parts and designed a 3D-printed casing; the report does not say the unit manufactured every component. It also describes ball bearings as a possible addition, not as part of the demonstrated strike.
What the unit demonstrated
The exercise took place at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, on September 30, 2026. Stars and Stripes reported that 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment soldiers assembled, armed and flew the Orqa MRM2-10. The report says the drone was fitted with an electronic safety and arming device and a casing designed by the unit and made with a 3D printer.
The reported live strike used 250 grams of C-4 alongside M6 low-voltage blasting caps. Those are details of this exercise, not a general measure of drone payloads or effectiveness.

The phrase does not mean the soldiers built the drone entirely from raw materials. The report says they assembled it from manufacturer-supplied parts and designed the printed casing. It therefore describes unit-level assembly and adaptation, rather than in-house manufacture of every aircraft component.

Stars and Stripes reported that the casing could carry almost two pounds of explosives. That is a capability statement in the article, not an independently verified specification. The report also says ball bearings could be added for use against personnel, but does not say they were used in the live strike.
What the report says about the flight
The drone flew from its launch site to a staged target more than a mile away in under five minutes, according to the report. 1st Lt. Eugene Lee, the reconnaissance platoon leader, said the aircraft could travel more than three miles, and beyond 12 miles with an additional receiver. The reported flight is an event description; Lee’s range figures are attributed statements, not results of independent testing.

Lee also said the unit could modify the “Dragoon bomb” into a shaped charge, which he described as effective against smaller tanks or armored personnel carriers. That is his assessment, not independent validation of the design or its performance.

Capt. Michael Bapp called the live kinetic strike without contractor or outside-unit support “a conventional Army first, potentially an Army-wide first.” The qualification matters: Stars and Stripes reported the unit’s characterization, but the available report does not independently establish an Army-wide first.

Regiment commander Col. Timothy Price said the exercise showed the unit adapting equipment on hand. His remarks describe the regiment’s view of the demonstration; they do not establish broader effectiveness or prove that the configuration is in general service.
