A University of Toronto spokesperson reportedly told recognized student groups that their planned October 7, 2026 event could not proceed, citing safety and operational concerns. The National Post report, republished by Unpublished.ca on October 3, describes the event as intended to “honour martyrs”; it does not name the organizers or include their account of the event.
What the report says U of T decided
According to the National Post story republished by Unpublished.ca on October 3, 2026, the university informed the recognized student groups involved that the event “cannot proceed because of significant safety and operational concerns.” The report attributes that explanation to an unnamed U of T spokesperson; it is not a direct university notice.
The spokesperson cited physical safety risks to attendees and the wider university community, the unsuitability of the planned space for a large gathering, and online promotion of counter-protests at the same time. The report also says the university would “act swiftly to enforce its policies should it become aware of potential violations.”

When and where the event had been planned
The reported plan was for 5:30 p.m. on October 7, 2026, on the steps of Sidney Smith Hall at U of T’s St. George campus. Those are planned details reported before the date, not evidence that the event took place.

What is known about the organizers and the event description
The report does not identify the student groups or provide their own explanation of the event’s purpose. “Honour martyrs” is the description used in the report’s headline and account; it should not be treated as a verified quotation from the organizers. Likewise, the headline’s “Anti-Israel” label is not presented here as a neutral university classification.
The report separately attributes criticism of some planned campus protests to the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), which characterized them as glorifying the October 7 attacks, honouring terrorists as “martyrs,” and calling for intifada. That is CIJA’s characterization; the report does not establish that the U of T organizers used all of that language.

What the report said about October 7 events elsewhere
As of October 3, the article said activities were still planned at UBC and McGill for October 7. UBC described activities hosted by Jewish and Palestinian student groups as not official university events. A rally was planned at McGill’s Roddick Gates for 2 p.m. The report is prospective, so it does not establish whether either activity ultimately went ahead.

The article frames the planned U of T event as taking place on the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack. It reports that 1,200 Israelis were killed and describes the attack as the deadliest against Jewish people since the Holocaust; those figures and that historical description are claims in the article, not independently verified here.

The available account is a secondary report quoting an unnamed university spokesperson and advocacy statements. It does not include a direct U of T notice or a statement from the organizers, so the university’s reported rationale and the event’s planned details should be understood with that attribution.
