A tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warns when one or more tyres are significantly underinflated; it does not replace checking pressure with a gauge. A steady warning calls for prompt pressure checks, while a light that flashes and then stays on can signal a system fault. Check all tyres monthly when cold and use the pressure specified on your vehicle’s label or in its owner’s manual.
What is a tyre pressure monitoring system?
TPMS is an onboard safety system that monitors tyre pressure or uses vehicle data to infer a pressure problem. A processor evaluates the information and turns on a dashboard warning when pressure falls below the system’s threshold. The exact display and service procedure depend on the vehicle. NHTSA explains the two main system types.
Direct TPMS
Direct systems use sensors located in the tyres to measure pressure. Depending on the vehicle, the dashboard may show individual readings or only a warning.

Indirect TPMS
Indirect systems use wheel speed and other vehicle sensor data to infer that a tyre may have lost pressure. They do not measure pressure directly.

What does the TPMS light mean?
Steady warning light
A steady low-pressure symbol means at least one tyre is significantly underinflated. Check the tyres and measure their pressure as soon as you can. Do not assume the warning identifies a puncture: it signals low pressure, which can have more than one cause.
Under the U.S. standard, the system must detect when one or more tyres—up to all four—are at least 25 percent below the manufacturer’s recommended placard pressure, or below a higher minimum activation pressure specified by the standard. This is a regulatory detection threshold, not a safe level to wait for before checking pressure. NHTSA’s final-rule summary describes the requirement.

Flashing, then steady
If the light flashes for a period and then remains on, NHTSA says this can indicate a TPMS malfunction. Arrange an inspection by a dealer or qualified service provider rather than treating it as an ordinary low-pressure warning. NHTSA’s tyre guidance explains this warning behavior.
Cold-weather warning
Cold weather can make a marginally low tyre trigger the warning temporarily; pressure may rise as the tyre warms during driving. Still inspect the tyres and check their pressure when the light comes on instead of assuming the warning is harmless.

How to check and maintain tyre pressure
- Check when the tyres are cold. NHTSA defines cold as when the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours.
- Measure every tyre, including the spare. Use an accurate tyre pressure gauge; keeping one in the vehicle can help you check pressure after a pothole or curb impact.
- Use the vehicle’s recommended pressure. Find it on the Tire and Loading Information label or in the owner’s manual. The pressure printed on the tyre sidewall is its maximum, not the vehicle’s recommended inflation pressure.
- Add or release air as needed. Use the gauge to determine how much air to add or to release excess air, then check the pressure again.
NHTSA recommends checking all tyres at least once a month when cold. A tyre can lose pressure after striking a pothole or curb, and TPMS warns only when pressure is significantly low. The agency states, “The TPMS is not intended to be a substitute for regular tire maintenance.” See its tire safety guidance and consumer tyre information.
NHTSA says properly inflated tyres can extend the average tyre life by 4,700 miles. The agency’s cited consumer guidance does not state a publication year for this figure, and it is not a guarantee for an individual vehicle. NHTSA’s tyre guidance provides the statistic.

It features six alarm modes: high pressure, low pressure, high temperature, rapid air leakage, sensor low battery, and sensor signal loss—providing comprehensive protection for your travels
- [Dual Power Supply of USB-C Charging & Solar Recharging]: The display supports two power options: USB-C connection to any 12V DC vehicle power source, or solar charging via the integrated solar panel. Flexible recharging ensures excellent endurance for daily driving or RV trips. (Note: Please fully charge the unit with USB-C before first use. Solar charging output varies with light conditions—use USB charging when battery or sunlight is insufficient. The monitor device can only be manually turned off while it is not charging by cable.)
- [Quick DIY Installation & Intelligent Auto-Calibration]: Installation takes just minutes—no need for tire shops or professional assistance. All sensors are pre-programmed to their tire positions, allowing true plug-and-play use. Just match each sensor to the labeled wheel position. Automatic pressure calibration eliminates manual settings: pressures +25% above the reference value trigger high-pressure alerts; values −15% below trigger low-pressure alerts
- [Long-Distance Signal Transmission & Wide Monitoring Range]: The TM12 offers strong signal penetration with a stable 50 ft transmission range, extendable to 100+ ft using the Tymate Repeater. Supports a wide 0–144 PSI pressure range suitable for cars, SUVs, MPVs, pickups, RVs, and most towable trailers. Ideal for upgrading older TPMS systems or adding tire monitoring to RVs and trailers for safer, more fuel-efficient travel. (Recommendation: Add a repeater when towing large RVs or when signal blockage is expected.)
Do all vehicles have TPMS?
In the United States, passenger cars, light trucks and vans from model year 2008 onward are required to have TPMS. Some 2006 and 2007 vehicles also have it. These are U.S. requirements; they should not be assumed to apply in other markets. For an older vehicle, check the owner’s manual or ask a dealer. NHTSA’s TPMS overview gives the U.S. applicability information.
What to know about replacement sensors and aftermarket systems
Replacement sensors and added monitoring systems are vehicle-specific. Before buying or installing one, confirm compatibility and any relearn or service steps with the owner’s manual, a dealer or a qualified tyre service provider. The available guidance does not establish fitment for a particular vehicle.

NHTSA’s 2008 interpretation says aftermarket TPMS products are not directly subject to FMVSS No. 138 as a vehicle standard. It also says a vehicle repair business or another covered entity may not make an originally compliant safety system inoperative. NHTSA does not approve vehicle equipment; manufacturers self-certify to applicable standards. Read NHTSA’s interpretation on aftermarket TPMS.
For context, the U.S. rule is a performance requirement for new light vehicles. NHTSA’s final-rule summary covers that U.S. standard. Separately, the UN Treaty Collection record identifies UN Regulation No. 141 as concluded in Geneva on 14 July 2016 and effective on 22 January 2017. National adoption and current application vary, so consult the rules for your market.
