Recent Kindle Scribe models can now dictate text instead of relying only on the on-screen keyboard. The change arrived with Kindle software version 5.20.1, and according to update coverage it is limited to the three newest Scribe models: the Kindle Scribe 3rd Generation, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, and the Kindle Scribe without Front Light. Earlier Scribe generations do not gain voice typing in this update.
What changed in software 5.20.1
Version 5.20.1 adds microphone-based voice typing to the keyboard. Its release notes are dated September 2026. Android Authority and The eBook Reader Blog both report the feature from the update notes, and Android Authority notes that it is absent on previous Scribe generations.
The feature is an input method, not a new writing tool. It converts speech into text in the field you are already typing in. It does not add new editing modes, transcription of existing documents, or summaries.

Coverage identifies three models as supported. Amazon’s UK software catalog lists version 5.20.1 for a wider group of Scribes, so the version listing alone does not show which devices receive the dictation feature. The table below separates the two.
#1 Best Overall
- Our most advanced Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” Colorsoft display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Bring ideas to life in color – The custom-built Colorsoft display delivers high-contrast, paper-like color that’s easy on the eyes without distracting flashes when writing.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel: The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
| Model | Voice typing (per update coverage) | Listed for 5.20.1 in Amazon’s UK software catalog | Other 5.20.1 feature reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle Scribe 3rd Generation | Yes | Yes | Fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes, plus general improvements |
| Kindle Scribe Colorsoft (1st Generation) | Yes | Yes | Fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes, plus general improvements |
| Kindle Scribe without Front Light | Yes | Yes | Fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes, plus general improvements |
| Kindle Scribe (2024) | Not reported as supported | Yes | Fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes, per update coverage |
| Kindle Scribe (2022) | Not reported as supported | Yes | Fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes, per update coverage |
If your Scribe is one of the two older models, the update still matters for the sticky-note capability, but it will not add a microphone to your keyboard.
How to dictate text on a supported Scribe
- Install software 5.20.1 and confirm your device is on that version before testing. Update coverage does not describe a menu path for this check, so use the software information screen in your device settings.
- Open a field that accepts text, such as Search, a book or document annotation, or a notebook name.
- Open the on-screen keyboard.
- Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard and speak. Text appears in the active field.
Reports describe these three text-entry locations. They do not say whether every text field on the device accepts dictation, so if the microphone icon does not appear in a particular field, treat that field as unconfirmed rather than broken.
Where voice typing has been reported to work
- Search, including the natural-language notebook search that Amazon describes in its Scribe feature guide.
- Book and document annotations.
- Notebook names.
Published coverage does not include a full list of supported languages or regions. If you write in a language other than the one your device is set to, test it before relying on dictation.

Why the official release notes do not match the reports
This is the most important caveat. Amazon’s visible US Scribe release-note page lists version 5.20.1 as adding handwritten sticky notes in fixed-layout eBooks or personal documents, plus general improvements. It does not mention dictation. Amazon’s UK software catalog confirms that 5.20.1 is available for the Scribe models, but the catalog text reviewed does not name the voice-typing feature.
That leaves the voice-typing details resting on technology reporting that attributes them to the update notes. The feature is credible enough to report, but readers should check their own device after updating rather than assume the feature exists because a version number appears in a catalog.
What the “more effortless” claim does and does not show
The headline’s wording reflects the availability of voice entry. It does not reflect a measured improvement. No published test in the reviewed coverage measures dictation accuracy, latency, words per minute, or time saved compared with tapping keys. Any comparison between voice and keyboard input on the Scribe remains untested in public reporting.

- All-new Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” glare-free display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel – The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – At just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, it’s redesigned for comfort, with a larger 11" display and 40% faster writing and page turns.
- Work comfortably in any light – The display automatically adapts brightness to your lighting conditions. Adjust the warmth for greater comfort at night.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
Amazon’s broader efficiency figure is a different claim. Its About Amazon launch article for the redesigned Scribe states: “The new Kindle Scribe has a beautiful new design that’s just like paper—it’s ultra-thin at 5.4mm, ultra-light at 400g, and 40% faster for writing and page turns.” That 40% figure is a manufacturer statistic for the redesigned hardware. It is not a measurement of voice typing.

Several features are often discussed alongside typing but are separate from the voice-input update. Amazon’s Scribe feature guide describes Search with natural-language notebook queries that return AI summaries and allow follow-up questions. The same guide covers AI notebook summaries, handwriting refinement into a script font, and Smart Shapes. Amazon’s redesigned Scribe launch page lists Google Drive and OneDrive document import and export, OneNote export, color pens and highlighters, and notebook workspace organization. None of these depends on the dictation feature.

If voice typing does not appear
- Confirm the device is a Scribe 3rd Generation, Scribe Colorsoft, or Scribe without Front Light. Older models are not reported as supported.
- Confirm the device is running software 5.20.1 or later.
- Check the specific field. Reports cover search, annotations, and notebook names only.
- Check that the keyboard shows a microphone icon. If it does not, dictation is not available there.
- If the update is not offered yet, wait and check again. Rollout timing is not described in the reviewed coverage.
Amazon’s visible US release notes do not list dictation, so if you need official confirmation for a specific region, check the release notes shown for your own country.
Voice typing on the Scribe is a practical addition for short entries like search queries and notebook names. Its value for longer writing remains untested in the reporting available, and it is best judged on your own device.
