The quickest method depends on your device and keyboard layout. In Microsoft Word for Windows, type 20AC and press Alt+X to convert it to €. On Windows, you can also hold Alt and type 0128 on the numeric keypad. On a Mac, use Keyboard Viewer or Character Viewer; on a Chromebook, the shortcut depends on the selected input method.
Type € in Windows
In Microsoft Word
- Type
20ACwhere you want the symbol. - Press
Alt+X. Word converts the hexadecimal Unicode code into €.
This method is useful if your active keyboard layout has no convenient euro key.
With the numeric keypad
- Turn on Num Lock if your keyboard requires it.
- Hold
Alt, type0128on the numeric keypad, then releaseAlt.
This Alt-code method requires the numeric keypad. The number row across the top of the keyboard does not work for it, according to Microsoft Support. If your laptop has no separate keypad, use Word’s Unicode conversion or symbol insertion feature instead.
With the Windows symbol panel
Press Windows key + . (period), open Symbols, and select the euro sign. This is a built-in alternative when the other methods are inconvenient.

Find or insert € on a Mac
There is no single euro shortcut established for every Mac keyboard layout. The available characters depend on the selected input source, so check the layout rather than assuming a shortcut found for another country will work.
- Open the Input menu and choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
- In Keyboard Viewer, select the active input source and press Option, Shift, or both to display the characters available with those keys.
- Choose the key combination that displays €.
If Keyboard Viewer does not make the symbol easy to find, use Character Viewer to locate and insert it. Apple documents these tools in its guidance on typing characters and accents and its instructions for using emoji and symbols.

Type € on a Chromebook
ChromeOS treats keyboard layouts as input methods. Add or select one in Settings → Device → Keyboard → Change input settings. You can switch input methods from the shelf, or use Ctrl+Shift+Space to cycle forward and Ctrl+Space to switch back, as described in Google’s Chromebook input-method guidance.
On the English (US) with International keyboard layout, a Google Chromebook Community answer dated February 4, 2024, gives AltGr+5 for €. AltGr is the right Alt key. This is a layout-specific community instruction, not a universal ChromeOS shortcut; first confirm that the US International input method is active.

If the shortcut does not work
- Check the active layout. A key printed with a symbol may produce something different when the software layout does not map it that way.
- Match the method to your device. Windows Alt codes need a numeric keypad; Mac Keyboard Viewer shows the active layout’s mappings; ChromeOS lets you change input methods.
- Use an insertion tool for a one-off symbol. Try Windows’ symbol panel, Word’s symbol feature, or Mac Character Viewer instead of changing a layout.
- Choose another input layout for frequent typing. If you regularly type in a language that uses €, selecting an appropriate layout can be more convenient than inserting the character each time.
