Two University of Mississippi students, Aidan Hamilton and Robert Strang, were found dead on Sept. 21, 2026, in separate locations. Authorities reported finding packaging associated with kratom-related products during both investigations, but public information available as of Oct. 3 does not establish that either student used the products or that they caused either death.
What happened to the University of Mississippi students?
Hamilton and Strang were found dead in separate incidents on Sept. 21. Early reports citing the university and local authorities said investigators had no evidence the deaths were connected. The university also said it knew of no additional student deaths, despite unverified social-media claims.
In a statement quoted by Mississippi Today, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Shawnboda Mead said: “The Coroner’s Office has confirmed two student deaths, and University Police are not aware of any additional student deaths.” Mississippi Today
What did authorities find?
Initial accounts described “packaged kratom.” Later law-enforcement clarification referred to packaging associated with kratom-related products, and the federal charging announcement described suspected kratom derivatives. Packaging found at a scene does not, by itself, establish that a person ingested the contents.

The products described in the federal announcement should not be conflated with ordinary natural kratom leaf. The U.S. Attorney’s Office named MGPI, MGM-15, and MGM-16 among derivatives it described as Schedule I controlled substances. Did kratom or another substance cause the deaths?
No public finding in the available accounts establishes that kratom, a derivative, or any other substance caused either death. Lafayette County Metro Narcotics clarified that its initial warning was not a declaration of causation: “That warning was not a declaration that kratom or any specific substance caused either death.” The clarification was reported by WMC on Sept. 30. Fox News reported Sept. 30 that Mississippi Department of Public Safety press secretary Alex Gibert said both toxicology reports had been completed and would be provided to the Lafayette County coroner and the families. That report did not disclose the results or final causes of death. Fox News
What do the federal charges mean?
On Oct. 1, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi announced that Yahya Mohamed Mosleh and his son, Islam Yahya Mosleh, had been charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled substances in connection with the death investigation. Prosecutors said investigators identified a suspected link between derivative packages and a local vape, tobacco, and beer store, and reported executing search warrants and seizing suspected controlled substances.

These are allegations in a criminal complaint, not convictions. The Associated Press reported Oct. 2 that prosecutors said a derivative found at one student’s scene was linked to a local store; AP also said it remained unclear whether kratom contributed to either death.
