Researchers have described two new sea-spider species from the Salish Sea: Callipallene pilosuspedes and Tanystylum kiixin. The study also redescribes five known species and provides a regional identification key, making it more than a two-species discovery: it adds a practical baseline for recognizing a poorly characterized marine fauna.
What are the newly described sea spiders?
Sea spiders, or pycnogonids, are strictly marine arthropods that generally live on the seafloor. A University of British Columbia study published in 2026 describes two species from the Salish Sea, which UBC says are the first sea-spider species described from the region in almost a century.
Callipallene pilosuspedes
Nautilus reports that this species is about a centimeter long and has a triangular mouth bounded by three lips and covered in sensory hairs. Its long, curved spines on the lower legs are another reported distinguishing feature. The sensory hairs and mouth shape are observations about the animal’s anatomy, not evidence of a risk to people.

Tanystylum kiixin
UBC’s study abstract reports that this species is closely associated with the hydroid Plumularia setacea. Nautilus describes its short, stiff legs as collecting debris and reports tiny single-celled parasites among the material. These details belong to T. kiixin, not to C. pilosuspedes.

What did the study examine?
The paper, “Sea spiders of the Salish Sea: Comparative morphology and molecular phylogenetic analysis of seven coastal species (Arthropoda, Pycnogonida),” examines seven species. It redescribes five previously named species and formally describes the two new ones.

The authors combined scanning electron microscopy with molecular analysis. The paper also provides a dichotomous key for pycnogonids of the Salish Sea and the west coast of Vancouver Island. A key guides identification by presenting paired choices about observable features; the authors’ stated aim is to reduce ambiguity when identifying the regional species.

Why does a regional identification key matter?
UBC describes Salish Sea sea-spider diversity as poorly characterized, with morphological descriptions and molecular data lacking for many species. When researchers cannot reliably distinguish species or compare observations, it is harder to build a dependable picture of which species occur in an area. Redescription, molecular analysis, and an identification key address that basic taxonomic work.
The number seven refers to the species examined in this paper. It is not an estimate of the total number of sea-spider species in the Salish Sea, their abundance, or how common either new species is.

Does the discovery show how climate change is affecting sea spiders?
No. Lead author Cormac Toler-Scott said his interest was in how sea spiders are affected by climate change and human disturbance, and that he could not find the information he was seeking. That was the motivation for the work, not a result it measured. The study establishes taxonomic and diversity information; it does not report a measurement of climate-change or human-disturbance effects on these species.
