Two TSA employees at Los Angeles International Airport developed a 3D-printed holder that keeps baggage-search Notices of Inspection, zip ties and keys together. Its first prototype was far less polished: a paper towel tube taped to an empty glove box. TSA and a trade publication report that the refined tool received a U.S. patent, though they do not provide its patent number or other legal details.
What did the LAX TSA employees invent?
Manager Kevin Peinado and Program Analyst Maria Maranon developed a holder for supplies officers use when searching baggage. According to Homeland Security Today’s October 1, 2026 report, the holder brings Notices of Inspection (NOIs), zip ties and baggage keys into one accessible place.
The practical problem was organization. The report says NOIs were kept in drawers or placed on top of explosives trace detection equipment cabinets, where they could fall to the floor. The holder was designed to keep the notices and related small items close at hand during searches.
How did a paper towel tube and glove box become a holder?
The paper towel tube taped to an empty glove box was the improvised starting point, not the finished invention. Peinado and Maranon gathered feedback from baggage officers, then used computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing to create and refine multiple versions.
#1 Best Overall
- [One Hand Tear] Simple design is the most practical design. With the paper roll firmly in place, you can easily tear the paper towel from bottom to top with one hand. The side bar design helps prevent the paper roll from sagging and unraveling, and keeps your kitchen countertop neat and tidy
- [Portable Top Design] This freestanding paper towel holder adopts a widened top design, which makes the top a handle, greatly increasing the portability, so that you can easily pick it up and take the paper towel holder to anywhere you need it, such as the kitchen or bathroom
- [Weighted Base plus Anti-slip Pad] The paper towel holder countertop has a weighted base for easy one-handed operation, keeping it stable while you tear paper. The base also has a full-size circular non-slip pad to further enhance stability and prevent scratches on your countertop
- [Stylish and Sturdy] This kitchen paper towel holder is made of high-quality metal material, and the surface is rust-proof and waterproof, which is durable. The simple and modern style highlighted by the matte black color is suitable for matching any decoration, saving space and adding style
- [Ideal Size] The paper towel stand is 12.4" tall with a 7.1" base diameter. Its compact design saves space, making it perfect for small spaces or countertops. Ideal for kitchens, half bathrooms, and areas with limited storage, it fits all standard and large paper towels
Officer feedback shaped the design
One change was adding magnets to the back. The magnets let staff adjust the holder’s height and move it when operational needs changed, according to the report. It describes rounds of testing and refinement but gives no test protocol or numerical results.
What is known about the patent?
TSA’s employee-story listing, dated September 21, 2026, and Homeland Security Today’s October 1, 2026 report both say the holder received a U.S. patent. TSA’s employee-story listing identifies the milestone, while the trade report provides more detail about the tool and its development.
