Police reportedly arrested two people after firing during polling for Tripura’s Village Committee elections on September 28, 2026, injured Tipra Motha candidate Khachindra Reang and two others in Gomati district. The two were produced before a court on October 1, while the investigation was continuing, according to reports published that day.
What happened during polling
Reports say the firing took place in the Warrangbari/Waranbari area of Gomati district while voting was under way for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections. The locality is spelled differently across reports, so both forms appear in coverage.
Reang was reported to be contesting Ward No. 2 of Gamaria Village Committee. He and two other people were injured. Hindustan Times reported that Reang was referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala.

Hindustan Times attributed the arrest account to a senior police officer, who said the two were arrested in Takarjala, Sepahijala district, based on secret information. Other reports described arrests in the Champaknagar and Takajala areas. The arrest-location descriptions therefore differ between accounts.
The reporting reviewed did not establish the arrested people’s identities, formal charges, a motive, or a later court outcome. An arrest is a procedural step, not proof of guilt; the case remained under investigation in the accounts published October 1.
