In July 2020, Twitter said attackers had viewed the direct-message inboxes of up to 36 of the 130 accounts they targeted, including an elected official in the Netherlands. Geert Wilders later said Twitter told him his account was compromised and his Twitter DMs were accessed. Twitter’s statement did not name him; contemporaneous reporting connected him to the description.
Which Dutch politician’s Twitter account was involved?
Twitter Support’s July 22, 2020 statement referred to “1 elected official in the Netherlands” but did not identify that person. Geert Wilders, a Dutch lawmaker, said Twitter had notified him that his account was compromised and that attackers had accessed his messages. The Associated Press reported his account of the notification, and Dutch broadcaster NOS identified him as the likely official described by Twitter. That identification is based on Wilders’s account and contemporaneous reporting, not on Twitter naming him in its statement.
Wilders said he regained control of his account on July 17. Describing the message access, he said attackers “indeed also got full access to my DM’s which of course is totally unacceptable in many ways,” according to AP.

What did attackers access, and how many accounts were affected?
Twitter said that up to 36 of the 130 targeted accounts had their DM inboxes accessed. That figure describes inbox viewing; it does not mean Twitter said all 36 message histories were downloaded.

AP also reported Twitter’s finding that 45 accounts had their passwords reset and were used to log in and tweet. Those account takeovers were part of the same incident, but taking over an account and viewing its direct messages are distinct forms of access.
Were message archives downloaded?
Yes, but Twitter reported a separate, smaller group: account-data archives were downloaded from eight accounts using Twitter’s “Your Twitter Data” tool. Those archives included direct messages, according to AP, and none of the eight accounts was verified. Do not confuse those eight archive downloads with the up to 36 accounts whose DM inboxes attackers accessed.

How did the Twitter attack happen?
Twitter described the incident as a coordinated social-engineering attack against employees who had access to internal systems and tools. Attackers used that internal access to take over accounts and publish fraudulent Bitcoin messages. The reported sequence explains how the attackers could reach accounts without the story being limited to stolen passwords or a vulnerability in an individual user’s device.
Were correspondents’ identities exposed?
Wilders said he was concerned about people who had messaged him from Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, because identifying them could put them at risk. That was his stated concern; the contemporaneous reporting does not establish that those correspondents’ identities were copied, disclosed publicly, or otherwise exposed. Access to a DM inbox should not be treated as proof that senders’ identities were made public.

What personal information and password access did Twitter report?
Contemporaneous reporting said email addresses and phone numbers could be visible through internal support systems. CBS described Twitter’s statement about passwords as applying to the “vast majority” of people, so it should not be rewritten as an absolute claim that no passwords were accessed.

Twitter Support said: “To date, we have no indication that any other former or current elected official had their DMs accessed.” This was the company’s statement at the time, not a claim that the incident could never affect another official or that every possible exposure had been ruled out permanently.
