There is no single best live game streaming platform. Among the two platforms with reported figures in Stream Hatchet’s 2025 and Q1 2026 reports, Twitch recorded more hours watched than YouTube Gaming in both periods. That makes Twitch the larger measured gaming audience, but it does not make Twitch the right choice for every streamer. The better platform depends on where your audience already watches, whether you already publish video on YouTube, how you plan to earn money, what rights you have to the games you play, and whether you want your broadcasts archived and searchable.
Which platform has the larger live gaming audience?
Stream Hatchet, a third-party tracker, estimates hours watched across platforms. The figures below are platform-wide totals. They are not revenue, unique viewer counts, or a forecast of how quickly any individual channel will grow.
| Platform | Hours watched, 2025 (Stream Hatchet, 2025 Yearly Report, published February 24, 2026) | Hours watched, Q1 2026 (Stream Hatchet, Q1 2026 Report, published June 11, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Twitch | 19.2 billion | 4.5 billion |
| YouTube Gaming | 8.8 billion | 2.2 billion |
| Facebook Live | Not stated as a separate leading figure in the comparison | Not stated as a separate leading figure in the comparison |
Facebook Live is among the platforms Stream Hatchet tracks, but neither report displays a separate leading figure for it. The ranking between Twitch and YouTube Gaming held in both periods. Large platform-wide hours do not guarantee that a small channel will be surfaced to new viewers, so treat this table as a measure of where gaming viewing happens, not a discovery guarantee.

- Where does your audience already watch? An existing following on one platform usually outweighs platform-wide averages. If your viewers already follow you on YouTube, a YouTube live stream sits alongside your other videos. If they gather in Twitch chat, starting elsewhere means rebuilding that community.
- Do you already publish video? YouTube is most useful when live streams are one part of a broader channel strategy. Twitch is built around live broadcasting and gaming community features.
- How will you earn money, and are you eligible yet? Each platform has a different route, covered below. Eligibility is conditional and changes over time.
- Do you have the rights to the games you stream? Monetization of game content depends on rights that you may not control. This applies on any platform that allows monetized streams.
- Do you need archives, moderation, or a specific setup? Check whether replays are kept, what moderation tools you need, and what equipment your route requires.
Twitch
Twitch had the largest measured audience of the platforms compared here in 2025 and Q1 2026. On May 13, 2026, Twitch’s blog post “Monetization for All,” written by Mike Minton, announced expanded access to selected tools. In the words of the post: “Starting May 13, 2026, Channel Points, subs, emotes, badges, and Bits will be available to eligible streamers globally over the course of a week.” Streamers onboard through Creator Dashboard.

Facebook Live and Facebook Gaming
Facebook Live is tracked by Stream Hatchet but does not appear as a separately reported leader in the 2025 or Q1 2026 comparisons. A secondary comparison article dated April 1, 2026, reports that the Facebook Gaming Creator Program ended on October 31, 2025. That claim has not been confirmed against a Meta primary source, so do not plan around it as settled fact. Before you rely on a Facebook gaming monetization route, check Meta’s current documentation for live video and creator monetization. Facebook is a conditional option when your existing audience is active there.

Playing a game on stream and earning money from that stream are separate questions. YouTube’s “Video game and software content” guidance, which is undated and has no named author, states: “Video game content may be monetized if the associated step-by-step commentary is strictly tied to the live action being shown and provides instructional or educational value.”

The same guidance says gameplay monetization depends on commercial-use rights from game publishers, and that simply showing gameplay for long periods may not be accepted. Check the publisher’s terms for each game before you promise revenue, on any platform.
Setup routes
YouTube’s live-streaming help describes three routes, and each has different equipment needs.
- Mobile: Stream from a phone. No computer or webcam is needed for this route.
- Computer webcam: Stream from a computer that has a webcam. A USB webcam is one common option for this route.
- Encoder: Use streaming software to send the broadcast. Console streaming may use different equipment, so check the specific setup you plan to use.
A webcam is needed only for the computer webcam route. Do not assume you need extra hardware such as capture cards, microphones, or lighting based on platform guidance alone.

- Choose YouTube if you want live streams connected to a broader channel and you can meet the Partner Program rules. Check publisher rights for every game you stream.
- Consider Facebook only if your audience is already active there, and verify current live and monetization tools with Meta before you commit.
Compare your actual account eligibility, your audience’s location, your content format, your need for archived replays, your moderation needs, and your game rights. These factors usually matter more than any single platform ranking.
