Twelve South’s AirFly Drive can make an existing wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connection wireless: plug the adapter into the car’s data-enabled media USB port, pair your phone, and the company says it will reconnect automatically on later drives. It does not add CarPlay or Android Auto to a car that lacks those systems.
What AirFly Drive does—and what it does not
AirFly Drive is a small USB adapter that bridges a car’s existing wired CarPlay or Android Auto connection to a wireless phone connection. The phone connects to the adapter over Wi-Fi after setup, according to Twelve South’s product page.
It is not a display, a replacement head unit, or a way to retrofit CarPlay or Android Auto into an unequipped vehicle. The car must already support one of those systems over a wired connection. An AUX input alone is not sufficient.

Will it work with your car?
The decisive requirement is factory-wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto, plus a USB port that carries the system’s data. A charge-only USB port cannot start the adapter. Twelve South describes support for “most vehicles from around 2016 on,” but that is not a guaranteed model-year cutoff; its product page directs buyers to the vehicle compatibility list linked by QR code in the box.
#1 Best Overall
- DRIVE WITHOUT PLUGGING IN: Turn your car's factory-wired CarPlay or Android Auto fully wireless. Compatible with most factory-wired CarPlay/Android Auto vehicles and your car's existing screen and controls.
- COMPACT, CLUTTER-FREE DESIGN: Sleek aluminum construction with both USB-A and USB-C support fits neatly out of sight. Less cable clutter with no need to pull your phone from your pocket or bag.
- SET IT ONCE, READY EVERY DRIVE: Plug it in and leave it connected, no app, no reconfiguring. Automatic reconnection on ignition gets you moving faster, with one-press switching between two paired phones and ongoing compatibility updates included.
- RELIABLE CONNECTION, NO COMPROMISES: Engineered to stay cool and maintain a stable wireless link, so you get smooth audio and maps without overheating or dropped connections
- FROM THE MAKERS OF AIRFLY: The #1 bestselling bluetooth adapter on Amazon, AirFly Drive is backed by the same quality, reliability, and support you expect from Twelve South.
There is a difference between that cautious guidance and launch coverage: 9to5Mac’s October 2, 2026 report says Twelve South claims coverage across more than 75 makes, reaching back to 2014 model years. That figure is the company’s compatibility claim as reported by 9to5Mac, not an independent test or confirmation that every vehicle from those years works. Check the manufacturer’s exact list for your car rather than relying on year alone.
Phone, connection and switching support
- Phone software: Twelve South lists iPhone support from iOS 10 and Android support from Android 11.
- USB connection: The adapter connects natively through USB-A. Twelve South includes a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter for a USB-C media port; the port still needs to carry CarPlay or Android Auto data.
- Reconnection: The company says AirFly Drive reconnects automatically after initial pairing.
- Two phones: It can store two paired phones and switch between them using a button.
How to set it up
- Disconnect your phone from the car’s existing Bluetooth pairing, as Twelve South instructs.
- Plug AirFly Drive into the car’s CarPlay/Android Auto media USB port. Use the included USB-C adapter if the media port is USB-C.
- Follow the instructions shown on the car display. If the setup screen does not appear, select the Apple CarPlay icon—even if you are setting up an Android phone.
- Complete phone pairing as prompted. Twelve South says the adapter uses Wi-Fi for the phone-to-car connection and should reconnect automatically on later drives.
These are the manufacturer’s setup instructions; AirFly Drive has not been independently tested for this article.
