It may be worth repairing a TV that will not turn on, but there is no reliable universal price cutoff. First rule out a remote, outlet, cable, or temporary software lockup. If the TV still will not start, get a model-specific diagnosis and written quote, then weigh the full cost and repair warranty against a replacement you would actually buy.
Check whether the TV really has no power
A blank screen does not always mean the television is not turning on. Sound, a standby light, a brief screen glow, or a startup logo can point to a picture or input problem instead. Notice what the set does when you press power; those details can help distinguish a power failure from a no-picture issue. TCL’s troubleshooting guidance discusses signs such as sound with no picture, while LG and Panasonic describe indicator-light clues in their support instructions.
Treat the indicator as a clue, not a diagnosis. An unlit light makes the power connection worth checking; a steady light may mean the TV is in standby; repeated flashing may warrant service. Indicator meanings vary by model, so consult the manual or the manufacturer’s instructions for your set. Panasonic’s UK support guidance on a flashing red light is specific to its covered models and should not be used to decode another brand’s light pattern.

- Check the power path. Inspect the cord and its connections at both ends where accessible. Do not use a visibly damaged cord. Test the wall outlet with another small device, then connect the TV directly to the outlet for a test, bypassing a power strip, surge protector, extension cord, or smart plug. See TCL’s power troubleshooting steps and LG’s power troubleshooting guidance.
- Use the TV’s physical power button. If the set starts this way, check the remote before assuming the TV needs repair. Replace its batteries with a new matching pair; check the remote’s markings or manual for the required type, since it varies. TCL and LG both recommend checking the remote and batteries.
- Power-cycle the TV. Unplug it for the period specified in the instructions for your model. Timing differs: TCL’s Google TV instructions say to wait at least 60 seconds, while Sony’s instructions for the models covered by its article specify two minutes. Do not treat either interval as universal.
- Disconnect external devices. Unplug HDMI, USB, and other equipment, leaving only the TV’s power connected, then try again. If it starts, reconnect one device at a time to identify whether a device or connection triggers the problem. TCL and Sony include this isolation step in their guidance.
- Record what happens. Note whether the indicator is off, steady, or flashing; listen for clicks or other sounds; and check for a brief screen glow or startup logo. These observations can help support staff assess whether the TV has no power or a picture problem.
Stop using the TV and unplug it if you see smoke or sparks, smell burning, suspect liquid has entered the set, or notice visible damage. If the fault persists after the checks, the indicator repeatedly flashes, or there are unusual electrical sounds, contact manufacturer support or a qualified repair provider rather than opening the television.

Get a diagnosis and compare the actual costs
Ask for a model-specific diagnosis and a written quote before deciding. Compare the total expected out-of-pocket cost—not just a headline parts price—with the price of a replacement that meets your needs. Include diagnostic charges, parts, labor, transport, and other fees. Ask what the repair warranty covers and for how long, and whether the quoted amount could change if the diagnosis reveals additional faults.
Also consider the TV’s age and condition, any other existing problems, the features and size you would want in a replacement, and how long you expect to keep the set. A repair may be more attractive if it restores a TV you value and the rest of the set is in good condition; replacement may make more sense if the quote is high relative to the particular replacement you would buy. These are decision factors, not a fixed percentage rule: the available sources establish no universal repair-to-replacement threshold.

The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2019 television reparability report notes qualitatively that repair requires electronics knowledge and access to service documentation—factors that can affect repair costs and a consumer’s decision. Your local quote, the diagnosis, and the coverage offered for the repair are more useful than a generic price rule.

- What is the diagnostic fee, and is it credited toward the repair?
- What fault did the diagnosis identify, and which parts and labor are included in the quote?
- Could the final cost rise, and will you get approval before additional work?
- What does the repair warranty cover, and what is its duration?
- Does the quote include collection, delivery, or other charges?
Warranty rights and service availability depend on your location, TV model, and purchase details. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish your eligibility for covered service, so check your purchase documents and ask the manufacturer or provider about your specific case. LG’s US support page recommends contacting LG for diagnosis and repair if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue; that guidance is not a guarantee of coverage or a particular repair outcome.
