If your TV appears to turn on but has a black screen and no sound, first check whether its own Home or Menu screen appears. If it does, the display is working and the problem is more likely the selected input, app, channel, connected device, or cable. If the menu is also invisible, check power and connections, then restart the TV before seeking model-specific support.
Check whether the TV is responding
A black screen does not by itself prove the TV has no power. Check for a standby indicator, press the TV’s physical Power button, and watch for brief screen lighting or listen for startup sounds. These signs help establish whether the set is responding, but none identifies a specific failed component. TCL notes that a black screen does not always mean the TV has no power (TCL Support).
Does the TV’s Home or Menu screen appear?
Press Home, Settings, or Menu on the remote; the exact button and label depend on the model and software. If the TV’s menu appears, the screen can display an image. Try a different app, channel, or input to narrow the issue to the source that fails. If no menu appears, continue with the connection and restart checks below.

- Select the input used by the connected device, such as a cable box, game console, or streaming device. Confirm that device is powered on.
- Reseat the relevant connections at the TV and device. Depending on your setup, check HDMI, coaxial, antenna, optical, and audio cables.
- If the problem occurs only with an HDMI device, restart that device and try another TV input if available. A known-working HDMI cable can also help test the connection. A loose or damaged cable can prevent video from appearing, even if sound works; replacing a cable will not fix an internal TV fault (TCL Support).
A “No Signal” message can point toward the selected source, cable, or connected device. LG also advises checking the cable connection or resetting the set-top box when troubleshooting no picture and no sound (LG Support).

Power-cycle the TV and connected device
- Turn off the TV and the affected connected device, then unplug both from power.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Reconnect them, turn them on, and select the correct TV input.
Menu names and troubleshooting steps vary by TV model, remote, and software version, so use the instructions for your specific set if the controls differ (TCL Support).
When to seek model-specific support
If the TV remains blank across apps, channels, and inputs—or you cannot see its own menu despite signs that it is starting—contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. A display or backlight issue is one possibility, but these symptoms alone cannot identify the defective part. Have the TV’s model number ready and describe which indicators or startup signs you observed. General troubleshooting guidance cannot establish the exact fault or repair cost.

Factory reset is a later step
Try a factory reset only after the input, cable, device, and power-cycle checks. A reset can change settings, and the menu path varies by model; follow the instructions for the exact TV rather than guessing at a button sequence (TCL Support).
