To turn on noise cancelling on supported JBL earbuds, connect them to your phone, open the JBL Headphones app, select your earbuds, and choose Noise Cancelling or ANC in the environmental-noise or Ambient Sound Control settings. The exact labels and earbud gestures depend on the model, so there is no single tap sequence that works for every JBL pair.
Turn on ANC in the JBL Headphones app
- Identify your earbuds. Check the name in your phone’s Bluetooth settings, in the JBL Headphones app, or on the charging case. JBL controls differ by model.
- Connect the earbuds to your phone and open the JBL Headphones app. If the app lists multiple devices, select the connected earbuds.
- Open the environmental-noise controls. Look for a section labeled Ambient Sound Control or similar; the wording can vary by model.
- Select Noise Cancelling or ANC. This is the setting intended to reduce outside sound. JBL describes the app as a way to control environmental noise on supported products, including Tune Buds Ghost, and provides app guidance for adjusting True Adaptive ANC.
- Check the app or your model’s manual for its confirmation cue. JBL materials do not establish one universal sound, light, or other indicator for all earbuds.
JBL describes wireless-earbud ANC as standard ANC, Adaptive ANC, or True Adaptive ANC. With True Adaptive ANC, JBL says the Headphones app offers seven adjustment levels and that the feature responds automatically to environmental changes. Those details apply to True Adaptive ANC, not to every JBL earbud.
Use an earbud gesture only after checking its assignment
Some JBL models can switch listening modes with a tap, press, or swipe, but the control and its assignment vary. In the JBL Headphones app, open the control or gesture settings for your specific earbuds and check which action is assigned to noise cancelling. JBL support instructions for applicable products describe enabling advanced swipe controls under Settings > Gestures; that path is not universal across JBL models or generations.

#1 Best Overall
- Adaptive Noise Cancelling with Smart Ambient: Enjoy the soundtrack of your life. Four noise-sensing mics minimize distractions and maximize audio quality, while Smart Ambient keeps you fully aware of your surroundings and helps you talk with the people around you without taking out your headphones. Use the JBL Headphones app to set your custom levels.
- IP68 water and dust proof: Sweat, rain, salt water, and sand? Sounds like a great time. JBL Endurance Peak 4 earbuds carry an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating, so they can withstand it all. Not to mention high temperatures, high humidity, or long-distance drops.
- Secure fit with TwistLock design: You might even forget you're wearing them. JBL OvalTubes with TwistLock stay in your ears all day without discomfort. The liquid silicone ear hook with memory wire is comfortable and adaptable to different sizes.
- JBL Pure Bass with Spatial Sound: Enjoy rich, clear JBL Pure Bass sound from our 10mm dynamic driver, delivering powerful stereo sound with deep bass for an immersive audio experience. Customize your sound to the way you are with Personi-fi 3.0. Take a quick earing test and adapt your audio to your personal features.
- 6 mics for perfect calls: Three mics per ear effectively capture your voice while suppressing noise from other sources. Meanwhile, the beamforming algorithm minimizes unwanted ambient noise, making your authentic voice more intelligible. The windproof design significantly reduces distortion from air friction and gives you a crystal-clear call experience—even in the middle of an outdoor run on a breezy day.
Choose ANC, not Ambient Aware or TalkThru
JBL groups Ambient Aware and TalkThru under Smart Ambient. These modes are designed to let you hear more of your surroundings or converse without removing the earbuds. They are not the setting to select when your goal is noise cancellation.
Why your JBL earbuds may not show an ANC option
- The model may not support ANC. Check the model’s product information or manual; having the JBL Headphones app does not mean every feature is available on every pair.
- The app may be showing a different device. Confirm that the earbuds are connected and selected in the app.
- The mode controls may be model-specific. Feature names and available controls vary. Consult the exact model’s manual rather than applying another model’s gesture or settings path.
Model-specific example: JBL Tune Buds Ghost
JBL’s product information for Tune Buds Ghost lists ANC, Smart Ambient, app-based environmental-noise controls, gesture customization, and three included eartip sizes. JBL/HARMAN International Industries, Incorporated, specified up to 10 hours of playback with ANC on for this model in 2023; this is a manufacturer figure for Tune Buds Ghost, not a universal JBL runtime or an independently tested result. Do not apply these specifications to other earbuds.
