To turn on Low Power Mode on a MacBook, open System Settings > Battery on macOS Ventura or later, then choose Low Power under Energy Mode for On battery. On macOS Monterey or earlier, use System Preferences > Battery. The setting is intended to reduce energy use and extend battery life, but Apple does not promise a specific number of extra hours.
Turn on Low Power Mode in macOS Ventura or later
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Battery in the sidebar. Scroll down if needed.
- Under Energy Mode, choose Low Power for On battery.
- If you also want Low Power Mode while plugged in, choose it separately under On power adapter, if that option is available on your Mac.
To check the active mode, open the Battery or lightning-bolt menu-bar icon and view the battery status menu. The available choices can vary by Mac and macOS version. Apple’s Power Modes guide describes the settings and compatibility details.
Use Low Power Mode in macOS Monterey or earlier
Open the Apple menu, choose System Preferences > Battery, then select Low Power from the Energy Mode menu. These older releases use System Preferences rather than System Settings.

Apple describes the feature this way: “Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life.” It is a power-use setting, not a guaranteed runtime boost: Apple does not state a universal number of extra hours for MacBook models, apps, or workloads. Your actual result depends on how you use the Mac.

On certain Macs with active cooling running macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, Apple also documents reduced fan noise. Check Apple’s supported-device information before assuming that applies to a particular model. Apple’s Power Modes guide covers the qualification.
Choose the mode for battery and adapter use
Where the menus are available, macOS lets you choose separately for On battery and On power adapter. Select Low Power on battery when reducing energy use away from an outlet is the priority. You can leave the adapter setting at another available mode if you prefer a different balance while plugged in. Some Macs offer an Automatic option; the choices shown depend on the computer.

Low Power Mode is only one available measure. Apple recommends these practical steps:

- Quit apps you are not using.
- Disconnect peripherals that are not in use.

If the MacBook still runs out of charge quickly
Low Power Mode reduces energy use while enabled; it does not restore lost battery capacity. Check Battery Health and Maximum Capacity in Battery settings to understand the battery’s condition. If macOS reports that service is recommended, follow Apple’s service guidance. A chemically aged battery can provide fewer hours between charges even when Low Power Mode is on.
Battery health management is separate from Low Power Mode. Apple says its health-management feature monitors temperature history and charging patterns to help reduce chemical aging; it addresses long-term battery condition rather than acting as an immediate low-power setting. Apple explains battery health management on Macs with Apple silicon, and its battery-condition guidance covers health and service status.
