To prepare a phone for loss, turn on its built-in finding service, enable offline and last-location options where available, and confirm you can access the account from another device. The steps vary by iPhone, Android model, and Samsung Galaxy; use the settings names shown on your phone.
Set up lost-phone recovery on an iPhone
On iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone. Turn on Find My iPhone, Find My network, and Send Last Location. Apple says the last-location option automatically sends the phone’s location when its battery becomes critically low. Find My network can help locate an offline device.
On supported iPhones, the phone can remain findable for up to 24 hours after it is turned off, or up to five hours in power reserve mode. These limits do not apply to every iPhone. Apple describes its crowdsourced Find My network as involving over a billion Apple devices; that figure is not a count of currently active devices or a promise that a missing phone will be recovered. From another Apple device, or in a browser at iCloud.com/find, confirm the iPhone appears under the Apple Account you use. Apple says a last known location may remain available in the Find My app for up to seven days after the device last sent its location through the network; availability depends on settings and connectivity.

If the phone is missing, Lost Mode can lock it with its passcode or Apple Account password, suspend Apple Pay cards and passes on compatible devices, and display a message with contact information. Keep a way to access your Apple Account that does not depend solely on the iPhone you are preparing to lose.
Set up lost-phone recovery on Android
Google’s current Android instructions use Find Hub. Open Settings > Security > Find Hub and turn on Allow device to be located. Then open Settings > Google > All Services > Find Hub > Find your offline devices and choose an offline-finding option. Names and paths can vary by Android version and device. Choose an offline-finding option
Google offers options that range from using stored encrypted recent locations without joining the finding network to participating in network finding in busy places or everywhere. Network-assisted offline finding requires a PIN, pattern, or password. The selected option determines how the phone participates; offline finding does not guarantee a live location.
Check that the phone appears in Find Hub and note which Google Account it uses. A device hidden in Google Play will not be findable there. Google says supported devices such as the Pixel 8 series may remain findable for several hours after power-off if offline finding is set to a network option and Bluetooth and Location were on when the phone shut down. This behavior is device-dependent, not a general Android guarantee.

Keep a way to sign in without the phone
If the missing phone is also how you receive Google 2-Step Verification prompts, prepare another sign-in method now. Google advises keeping a backup code or physical security key somewhere safe. Without access to the account, remote locking or erasing may be difficult.
Set up recovery on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet
Samsung’s US instructions require a Samsung account on the device and remote controls enabled. On supported devices, open Settings > Security and privacy > Lost device protection. Turn on Allow this phone (or tablet) to be found, Send last location, and Offline finding. Menu names and availability can differ by model, software, and region. Samsung’s Galaxy recovery guide

Depending on the device and service availability, use Samsung Find or SmartThings Find after signing in to the Samsung account. Samsung’s SmartThings documentation says Offline Finding uses nearby Samsung community devices over Bluetooth to detect supported missing Galaxy devices and report a last known location anonymously. An Encrypt Offline Location option requires a six-digit PIN to view offline location. SmartThings Find support
A powered-off Galaxy device may provide only its last known location. Samsung also documents a Track location feature that sends updates every 15 minutes when the feature is used; this is not a promise of an update while the phone is offline.

Test the setup before you need it
- Open the relevant finding service on a separate trusted device or in a browser and sign in to the account used on the phone.
- Confirm that the phone appears in the device list. If it does not, check the account and location or finding settings on the phone.
- Review the offline-finding and last-location settings. For Android, also verify the phone is not hidden in Google Play.
- Make sure you can complete account sign-in if the phone is unavailable. For Google 2-Step Verification, store a backup code or physical security key separately.
What to do when the phone is missing
Use Apple Find My, Google Find Hub, or Samsung Find/SmartThings Find from a separate trusted device. If the phone is likely nearby, use the service’s ring option. If theft is possible, mark it lost or lock it, and display a safe contact method if the service supports one.
Do not go to a map location to confront someone. Samsung specifically advises reporting a stolen device’s location to authorities and letting them retrieve it. Consider remote erasure only after weighing recovery against the need to protect data and your backup situation; Samsung advises backing up before a remote factory reset.
