You can use an existing Fire TV Stick to show personal photos as its screensaver, provided it’s linked to the right Amazon Photos account and your device offers the relevant settings. It cost nothing in my case because I already had the stick, TV, Wi-Fi, Amazon account, and suitable photo storage; those requirements mean it isn’t guaranteed to be free for everyone.
Check which photo display option your Fire TV supports
Fire TV’s standard screensaver can display personal photos and photos shared with you through Amazon Photos. Amazon documents this option in its Fire TV photo personalization help.
Ambient Experience is a separate feature, and Amazon says it is not available on every Fire TV device. On your stick, open Settings > Display & Sounds and look for an Ambient Experience option. If it is absent, use the standard screensaver route if available; do not assume Ambient Experience menus or behavior will appear on your model.
What you need before setting it up
- A Fire TV Stick connected to a television with an HDMI port.
- Wi-Fi and internet access.
- An Amazon account, with access to the Amazon Photos account that contains the pictures you want to display.
- Enough Amazon Photos storage for the photos you want to use.
Amazon lists the HDMI extender as optional in its Fire TV Stick setup guidance. If the stick is not connected to the network or signed in, follow Amazon’s general Fire TV setup instructions first.

Add your photos and select what to show
- Put the photos in Amazon Photos. Sign in to the Amazon Photos account you intend to use and upload or select the personal photos and albums. You can also use photos shared by people you invite, as Amazon’s help page explains.
- Open the Fire TV screensaver settings. On the stick, go to Settings and find the screensaver or display personalization controls. Menu wording and placement can vary by device and software version.
- Choose the Amazon Photos content. Select the photos or albums you want the screensaver to display, using the available on-screen controls.
- Review the current selection. Use the screensaver or Amazon Photos controls listed on your device to manage which photos are displayed. Remove or change selections if you do not want a particular picture to appear.
- Let the screensaver start. Leave the Fire TV idle until its screensaver activates. If it does not appear, return to the display settings and confirm that photo display is enabled and the intended content is selected.
Know what “free” means for Amazon Photos
Amazon’s current help documentation says all customers receive 5 GB of storage for photos and videos. In select countries, Prime members and Alexa+ standalone subscribers receive unlimited full-resolution photo storage plus 5 GB for videos and other files. These are Amazon service allowances, not a guarantee that every account has unlimited photo space; check your account’s available storage before uploading a large library. So the setup can be free if you already own a usable stick and TV, have internet and an Amazon account, and your photos fit the storage available to you. A new device, connectivity, or additional storage could change that calculation.

Keep screensaver and Ambient Experience distinct
For a simple photo frame effect, the standard screensaver is the key setting to look for. Ambient Experience is a different mode that some Fire TV devices support. If your model offers it and you choose to leave it running for long periods, Amazon warns that it may increase the device’s energy consumption. Check the mode available on your stick before choosing a setup.
