An Istanbul court ordered Ferhat Gündoğdu, head of the Turkish Football Federation’s Central Referee Board, held in pretrial detention on 3 October 2026, along with four other suspects. Two more suspects were released under judicial control. The measures concern allegations under investigation; they are not convictions.
What the court ordered
The seven suspects appeared before a judge at Istanbul’s Çağlayan courthouse on Friday, 2 October, after being detained on 29 September. On 3 October, the court ordered five held in pretrial detention:
- Ferhat Gündoğdu, head of the TFF’s Central Referee Board (MHK)
- Emre Kosif
- Ferdi Karadoruk
- Yunus Yıldırım
- Alican Sağlar
Sebahattin Şahin and Ahmet Şahin were released subject to judicial control, including travel bans and reporting requirements, according to TRT Haber. Pretrial detention is a procedural measure, not a finding of guilt.

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said prosecutors are examining alleged interference in referee classification, assignments, scoring, appointments and rules examinations. In Al Jazeera’s AFP report, Gürlek’s statement was rendered as “interference in the processes of referee classification, assignments, scoring and appointments as well as the exams on rules”.

Reports also list alleged offenses including forgery of official documents, breach of trust and unlawful acquisition of personal data. TRT Haber additionally reports “eziyet,” a term commonly rendered as torture or torment. The accessible reports do not include a charging document, so the precise legal allegations should be treated as reported descriptions, not as a complete official charge sheet. Al Jazeera’s AFP report and TRT Haber provide those accounts.
What the TFF says about the VAR-room inspection
Police inspected the video assistant referee (VAR) room at the TFF’s Hasan Doğan National Teams Camp and Training Facilities on 29 September. The federation confirmed the inspection in a statement published on 30 September and said it took place with the knowledge and participation of officials from relevant departments.

The TFF also addressed claims circulating in social media and other outlets that digital materials in the Referee Affairs Department had been deleted before the inspection and recovered by police technical staff. The federation called those claims false, said the inspection’s purpose and scope would be assessed in light of the investigation, and stated that it was cooperating with judicial and law-enforcement authorities. This is the federation’s account, not an independent determination of what happened to the materials. See the TFF statement and Turkish Minute’s report.
How this differs from the 2025 betting case
The current investigation follows a separate 2025 TFF action involving 149 referees suspended over alleged illegal betting, as reported by Al Jazeera/AFP and Turkish Minute. Those reports say it was unclear whether the betting probes were connected to the Gündoğdu investigation. The present case’s reported focus is referee administration, examinations and appointments; the allegations should not be merged without a sourced statement establishing a link. Al Jazeera and Turkish Minute describe the relationship as unclear.

What remains unknown
The reports available on 3 October do not establish the court’s written reasons for detention, the prosecution’s full evidence, a next hearing date or a trial timetable. They also do not provide comments from Gündoğdu, the other suspects or their lawyers. Further claims about evidence or the case’s schedule therefore require confirmation from subsequent court records or sourced reporting.
