TurboTax Online offers three different levels of service: prepare a return yourself, prepare it with on-demand expert help, or have an expert prepare and file it. Whether it is a good fit depends on your forms, the help you want, and the final federal and state fees—not on the “Gold Standard” label. Intuit describes its products and pricing; the IRS provides separate free filing options for eligible taxpayers.
Which TurboTax service fits your needs?
For the 2026 filing season, you are preparing a return for income and circumstances from tax year 2025. Intuit’s TurboTax Online comparison page describes three pathways. Its service descriptions are the company’s claims about what it offers, not independent findings about preparation quality.
| Path | Who prepares the return? | What Intuit says is included |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | You | Online self-preparation; the forms and circumstances your return requires determine which product applies. |
| Do it yourself with expert help | You, with access to assistance | Intuit advertises on-demand access to tax experts and a final expert review. |
| Full service | A matched Intuit expert | Intuit says an expert handles preparation and filing, online or in person where available. |
Compare the level of responsibility and assistance you want before comparing prices. A service with expert involvement is not the same as preparing the return yourself, and the exact forms and circumstances can affect availability and fees. See Intuit’s TurboTax Online comparison.

Is TurboTax Free Edition free for your return?
Intuit describes Free Edition as $0 for federal, $0 for state, and $0 to file for eligible simple returns. Its stated eligibility is limited to a simple Form 1040, with no forms or schedules except as needed for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, student-loan interest, and Schedule 1-A. Intuit estimates that roughly 37% of taxpayers qualify; that is the company’s estimate for its tax-year 2025 product, not an IRS statistic. Check Intuit’s Free Edition eligibility details.
#1 Best Overall
- TurboTax Desktop Edition is download software which you install on your computer for use
- Requires Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma or later (Windows 10 not supported)
- Recommended if you own a home, have charitable donations, high medical expenses and need to file both Federal & State Tax Returns
- Includes 5 Federal e-files and 1 State via download. State e-file sold separately. Get U.S.-based technical support (hours may vary).
- Live Tax Advice: Connect with a tax expert and get one-on-one advice and answers as you prepare your return (fee applies)
A W-2 or a “free” headline alone does not establish that your return qualifies. Check the forms and schedules your circumstances require against the eligibility terms before relying on a $0 filing cost. Intuit notes that availability and fees depend on products and tax circumstances.
How much does TurboTax Online cost?
There is no single reliable price for every return in the available product information. Intuit says many paid online and mobile products can be started without paying upfront; payment is due when you reach an e-file, print, mail, or add-on purchase step. The final fee can depend on product, forms, filing circumstances, timing, and add-ons, and Intuit says prices may change without notice. Check the live offer for your specific return before filing.

For full service, Intuit’s quoted starting price is a base for one federal return with one W-2 and one Form 1040. It is not a guaranteed total for a return with additional forms or different circumstances. Confirm the final federal and state charges, including any add-ons, before you proceed. IRS Free File guided software
Taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less can access guided tax software through IRS Free File at no cost for the 2026 filing season, subject to each provider’s additional requirements. Those requirements can include age, income, state residence, or military status. Start at the IRS Free File page to get the free offer; some partners offer free state returns, but the IRS does not promise a free state return from every provider.
The IRS’s January 2026 participant list includes eight providers: 1040Now; Drake (1040.com); ezTaxReturn.com; FileYourTaxes.com; On-Line Taxes; TaxAct; TaxHawk (FreeTaxUSA); and TaxSlayer. Participation in Free File is not a quality ranking, and each provider’s eligibility rules still apply. See the IRS’s 2026 season announcement and partner list.

- Compare the full cost. Confirm federal and state fees, add-ons, and any timing-sensitive offer conditions against your actual circumstances.
- Check program eligibility. For IRS Free File, start at IRS.gov and verify the participating provider’s additional rules. For VITA/TCE or MilTax, check the relevant eligibility conditions.
- Consider how you expect to receive a refund. The IRS says most people who file a complete and accurate return electronically and choose direct deposit receive refunds within 21 days, but some returns require more review and take longer. Is TurboTax the “Gold Standard”?
That phrase is a judgment, not a conclusion established by the available product descriptions or IRS program information. Intuit explains its own service options, eligibility, and pricing, while the IRS sets out free alternatives; neither provides an independent comparison that proves TurboTax is the best or the market standard. Treat the label cautiously and judge the service by whether it supports your return, offers the assistance you want, and shows an acceptable final price.
