For the person receiving it, a Tumblr anonymous ask does not reveal the sender’s Tumblr identity. Tumblr’s Getting Started guide says, “We (staff) don’t know who sent you that anonymous ask. It’s anonymous.” That is Tumblr’s stated description of the feature—not a guarantee that no data exists or that a sender could never be identified in any circumstance.
What anonymous means on Tumblr
Tumblr’s Ask feature lets a logged-in user send a question either under their account or as an anonymous “phantom,” if the destination blog permits anonymous asks. The recipient does not receive the sender’s Tumblr identity with an anonymous ask. Tumblr also says its staff do not know who sent one. Tumblr’s Getting Started guide describes the feature directly.
An ask is a one-off question rather than a two-way conversation like messaging. Asks may be published and reblogged, but an anonymous ask cannot be answered privately: Tumblr says the response must be public. Tumblr’s Ask guide explains the feature and its constraints.

Tumblr’s statement is clear about the feature: it says staff do not know who sent an anonymous ask. Its separate Legal Guidelines describe categories of information Tumblr may store, including basic account details, a date- and time-stamped IP address associated with account or blog creation, and IP address data associated with site activity such as posting and revisions. Tumblr says disclosure of non-public information generally requires valid legal process, with an emergency exception described in its guidelines.

Those general data practices do not establish that Tumblr can retrieve the sender identity for a particular anonymous ask. They also do not prove that every anonymous ask is impossible to trace. An IP address is not, by itself, proof of a person’s identity. The sources support Tumblr’s stated anonymity feature and its general information and disclosure policies, not a definite outcome for every ask or investigation.
How to control anonymous asks on your blog
To receive anonymous asks, the blog must have asks enabled and allow anonymous questions. Tumblr’s instructions describe enabling asks in settings and checking “Allow anonymous questions” on the web. Labels and layouts can change, so use your blog’s current settings rather than relying on a fixed sequence of taps.

If an anonymous ask is abusive or unwanted, Tumblr offers two controls:
- Turn off anonymous asks: Change the ask settings for your blog so users can no longer submit anonymously.
- Block the anonymous ask: Tumblr says this blocks the IP address of the blog that sent it from sending further anonymous asks. The sender may still interact non-anonymously, and Tumblr’s Getting Started guide says this IP block cannot be undone. It blocks an IP address; it does not establish or block a person’s identity in every context.
See Tumblr’s Blocking Users guide for its explanation of blocking anonymous asks and disabling the feature.

Sending limits and delivery problems
Tumblr’s Ask guide lists a limit of 10 asks per hour, with no more than five anonymous asks among them, and a 500-character limit. These are Tumblr’s stated feature limits and may change.
An ask that appears not to send may also be affected by links, paragraph breaks, special characters, emoticons, ellipses, missing spaces between sentences, or a network-level block affecting the recipient. Check the message against Tumblr’s current Ask guidance if delivery fails.
