TSMC says that, once its announced Arizona fabs are complete, around 30% of its global manufacturing capacity for 2nm and more advanced technologies will be in Arizona. That is a future capacity projection—not a claim that the United States currently makes 30% of TSMC’s 2nm chips or output.
What does TSMC’s 30% figure mean?
The percentage refers to TSMC’s 2nm and more advanced manufacturing capacity expected to be located in Arizona after the announced fabs are completed. It does not refer to all TSMC chips, all U.S. chip production, or necessarily the share of finished chips shipped from Arizona. The Arizona Commerce Authority reported the target in 2026, and TSMC had stated an approximately 30% goal in 2025. Arizona Commerce Authority, 2026; TSMC, 2025.
The cited announcements do not provide a facility-by-facility capacity breakdown or the calculation behind the percentage. Treat it as a company projection, not an independently audited forecast.
What is TSMC planning to build in Arizona?
On July 16, 2026, TSMC announced an additional $100 billion investment for four more Arizona fabs intended for 2nm-or-more-advanced technologies, according to the Arizona Commerce Authority. The authority linked that expansion to TSMC’s projection that Arizona would account for around 30% of its capacity in those technology classes once the announced fabs are complete. The $100 billion and four-fab figures describe the announced expansion; they are not a date or guarantee for when the projected capacity share will be reached. The cited official materials do not state a firm completion date for all the fabs or a date for reaching 30%.
What is TSMC already making in the United States?
Arizona has semiconductor production already, but the cited current-production milestone is not 2nm. The Arizona Commerce Authority says TSMC’s first Arizona fab has been in volume production of N4 since late 2024. That establishes N4 production, not current Arizona production of 2nm-class chips. How have the Arizona plans changed?
Earlier plans provide context but should not be mistaken for a complete current schedule. In an April 2024 announcement, the U.S. Department of Commerce described nanosheet technology at 2nm among the plans for the second Arizona fab, and 2nm-or-more-advanced technology for the third fab depending on demand. That dated plan does not establish the timing or final capacity of the later expansion. U.S. Department of Commerce, April 2024.

- The completion date for all announced Arizona fabs.
- When Arizona would reach the projected 30% share.
- How much 2nm-and-more-advanced capacity each fab will have.
- The assumptions or calculation used to produce the percentage.
TSMC’s stated aim, quoted by the Arizona Commerce Authority, is to build “an independent leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing cluster.” That phrase describes the broader goal; it does not add a schedule or a separate capacity measure. Arizona Commerce Authority announcement.
