TSA is removing chairs from airport checkpoint positions where officers check travelers’ IDs and documents, according to reports published September 29 and October 1, 2026. The agency says standing supports alertness, security posture and hospitality, while AFGE TSA Council 100 argues chairs are basic ergonomic and safety support. The reports do not establish a specific presidential order, the exact start date, or how exceptions and accommodations will work.

What changed at TSA checkpoints?

ABC News and Reuters reported September 29, 2026, that TSA was removing chairs at checkpoint travel-document checking positions nationwide; The Washington Post described the change on October 1. Officers checking passengers’ IDs are expected to stand at those posts.

The reported policy concerns document-checking positions at checkpoint entrances. It should not be read as a requirement for every TSA employee to stand throughout an entire shift, or as confirmation that chairs have been removed from every TSA work area. The Washington Post observed seven officers processing IDs without chairs at Reagan National Airport’s North Security Checkpoint during a late-afternoon rush. That is an observation at one place and time, not proof of implementation at every airport.

The coverage describes an announcement by TSA, not a specific order personally issued by President Donald Trump. The reports do not provide the underlying TSA directive or establish its precise effective date, any exceptions, or the process for accommodations.

Why does TSA say officers must stand?

A TSA spokesperson told ABC News and The Washington Post: “This welcome change reinforces both our security posture and our commitment to hospitality by having these officers on their feet and alert.” The agency also said: “All officers must meet fitness for duty requirements to be capable of performing their vital national security function while simultaneously creating a welcoming and professional environment for travelers.”

Those statements describe TSA’s rationale; the cited coverage does not independently demonstrate that standing improves screening outcomes, security or the traveler experience. The spokesperson was not named in the reports.

What does the TSA union say?

AFGE TSA Council 100 said officers were not consulted and objected on employee-rights, ergonomic and safety grounds. The union argues that chairs support officers who stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods. Reuters reported that it called the change a “disregard for workers’ rights and safety” and said chairs “serve as basic ergonomic and safety support for officers that stand and walk on hard surfaces all day.”

In a statement quoted by ABC News, the union said: “This disregard for employee rights and safety is an example of a broad pattern of TSA’s true consideration of the employees who keep our nation safe.” The Washington Post quoted the union saying, “TSA is treating this matter like it is a privilege,” and adding, “It is not; it is basic safety and common decency for the workforce.” ABC News also reported that the union urged members to contact congressional leaders and said it was moving aggressively to address the matter.

What are the ergonomic concerns about standing?

The Washington Post quoted Kathryn Sawyer, a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist and assistant professor at Tufts University. Sawyer said static standing can strain the feet, ankles and knees, and recommended that officers be able to change positions frequently. She cautioned: “Going from one static position to another static position is truly not the best choice they could have made.”

This is an expert’s comment reported by the Post, not a TSA-specific study or a formal agency safety finding. It addresses the potential drawbacks of prolonged static standing; it does not establish what arrangements TSA will permit at individual posts.

Does the new labor framework explain the chair policy?

No direct connection is established in the cited reporting. A TSA announcement distributed through PR Newswire said a new labor framework would take effect January 11, 2026, rescinding the 2024 collective bargaining agreement and other determinations. Adam Stahl, then Senior Official Performing the Duties of TSA Deputy Administrator, said transportation security officers should focus on keeping travelers safe. The chair-policy reports do not show that this framework legally caused or specifically authorized chair removal.
