President Donald Trump praised passenger Yaniv Hayun after a cockpit emergency aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, saying, “He’s a hero” and, “What a job he did.” The September 30 flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after an altercation in the flight deck, according to Flydubai’s statement as reported by KPBS. Accounts of how passengers and crew intervened are still preliminary; the airline said the motive was unknown and under formal investigation.
What happened aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073?
Flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, when an altercation occurred in the flight deck. Flydubai said the crew secured the aircraft and diverted it for an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, according to KPBS Public Media/NPR’s report.
Contemporaneous passenger accounts and news reports say passengers and crew intervened to subdue the co-pilot. The available accounts do not provide a final official reconstruction of cockpit access, the sequence of events, or who controlled the aircraft at each moment.

Trump praised Yaniv Hayun, whom The Times of Israel reported was an Israeli plumber who helped subdue the co-pilot. In a video cited by the paper on October 3, Trump said, “I just want to thank and congratulate Yaniv Hayun,” then added, “He’s a hero.” The paper also quoted Trump describing Hayun’s actions with the words, “What a job he did.”

What is known about the descent and passenger accounts?
Early reports describe a rapid descent, but the figures differ and should not be treated as a final official flight-data finding. KPBS reported Flightradar24 data showing a drop of more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. A passenger’s account carried in a CNN transcript from September 30 put the descent at about 14,000 feet in 37 seconds.
The CNN transcript identifies passenger interviewee Assaf Rajwan, separately from Hayun, and quotes him describing the moment as “an existential moment, a to be or not to be moment.” These are attributed accounts from the arrival period, not an official investigative chronology.

Why did the plane divert to Saudi Arabia?
Flydubai said the flight diverted to Tabuk for an emergency landing after the flight-deck altercation. The airline’s reported statement said the motives were unknown and remained subject to a formal investigation. Although the KPBS report’s headline notes that possible terrorist links were being investigated, a terror motive has not been established in the material reported here.
The Times of Israel reported that the flight carried around 180 passengers, nearly all Israeli; that is the outlet’s reported figure, not a confirmed final passenger manifest.
