South Korea has not committed to investing $54 billion in Alaska LNG. President Donald Trump announced the figure on September 30, 2026, but South Korea’s industry ministry said no investment decision or amount had been finalized. Seoul said it would assess the proposal’s commercial viability and whether it meets Korean legal procedures.

What Trump said—and what South Korea has decided

Trump announced the proposed investment on September 30. On October 2, he rejected the suggestion that he had “jumped the gun,” saying South Korean representatives had been present and that he would “just charge them more” if South Korea did not proceed. His remarks described his view of the announcement; they did not establish that Seoul had approved the investment.

South Korea’s industry ministry said, “No decision has been made on whether to invest or on the size of the investment.” Han Jeoungae, secretary-general of President Lee Jae Myung’s Democratic Party, likewise said the decision would follow a review under domestic legal procedures and the principle of commercial viability. The public position reported by the Associated Press and Reuters is therefore an unresolved proposal, not a confirmed $54 billion commitment. Associated Press · Reuters

What the Alaska LNG project would involve

The proposed project would connect gas fields on Alaska’s North Slope to an LNG export terminal in the southern part of the state. The Associated Press reported a proposed pipeline length of 807 miles (about 1,300 kilometers). Reuters, citing the White House, reported design capacity of about 3.9 billion cubic feet of gas per day and output of up to 20 million metric tons of LNG annually. These are proposed design figures—not current production or operating capacity. The plan is intended to ship gas to Asian markets. Reuters

Why a decision is still pending

South Korea’s review

Seoul has said it will examine whether the project makes commercial sense and complies with Korean legal procedures. The reports do not establish a deadline for that review or an eventual Korean contribution.

The project still needs buyer commitments

Reuters reported that developer Glenfarne had lined up LNG purchase commitments for 13 million metric tons per year, but needed another 3 million metric tons per year to support a final investment decision and make commitments binding. Glenfarne said it would work with the U.S. and Korean governments on an investment structure and the remaining steps toward that decision. The reported information does not establish that a final investment decision has occurred. Reuters

How the $54 billion proposal fits into the wider package

Reuters described the Alaska proposal as part of a broader $350 billion strategic investment package associated with the U.S.–South Korea trade agreement: $150 billion for shipbuilding and $200 billion for strategic investments. That broader figure should not be read as an approved Alaska allocation.

In the same package, Reuters reported South Korea confirmed two separate projects: $22.3 billion for a Texas gas-fired power project and $120 billion for eight nuclear reactors. Those announcements are distinct from the unresolved Alaska LNG proposal. Reuters
