No presidential pardon, even if issued, automatically makes someone eligible for the WNBA Draft or a league roster. WNBA employment and draft terms are governed by the league’s agreement with the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA). Trump’s reported rally remark is not a WNBA eligibility decision, and the exact eligibility language in the identified 2026 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) has not been confirmed in the material available.
What Trump reportedly said
Hindustan Times reported on October 3, 2026, that Trump made the remark during a rally in Durant, Oklahoma, while discussing transgender athletes and women’s sports. Its account says Dennis Rodman and Enes Kanter Freedom were present and attributes the quoted wording to Mediaite. No primary rally transcript or recording is available in the cited account, so the wording should be understood as reported, not independently verified.
“So [Rodman and Kanter Freedom], they are good and they have an exemption. I’m giving them a full pardon that they can go into women’s sports anytime they want,” Trump said, according to Mediaite, as cited by Hindustan Times.

The same report says Kanter Freedom announced in August that he intended to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft and later submitted his declaration. The reported remark does not establish that a pardon was issued, that either man received a WNBA exemption, or that the league approved either man to play.

Why a pardon offer does not decide WNBA eligibility
The WNBA’s published FAQ describes the CBA as an agreement between the league, on behalf of its teams, and the WNBPA, on behalf of players. It sets employment terms and the parties’ rights and obligations. A political statement is not a draft declaration, a league eligibility determination, or a roster place. The WNBA and WNBPA identify their agreement and negotiating roles on their respective sites: WNBA FAQ and WNBPA CBA page.
This distinction is about what the remark can establish: it cannot itself change league rules or substitute for a decision under the league’s governing agreement. The available reporting does not document an issued pardon or a WNBA decision granting an exemption.

What the published WNBA draft rules say—and do not say
The WNBA FAQ lists general draft conditions: a domestic entrant must be at least 22 in the draft year and either have no college eligibility remaining or renounce future college eligibility; an international entrant must be at least 20 in the draft year. These are age and college-eligibility conditions. They do not resolve the separate, disputed question of participation eligibility.
The union’s site identifies a 2026 CBA and its summary index lists Article XIII, “Player Eligibility & WNBA Draft,” separately from Article XIV, “Player Conduct + Discipline.” The full operative agreement and summaries could not be reviewed in the cited material, so the precise 2026 eligibility test or review process is not established here. The WNBA FAQ still discusses the 2020 CBA and plans to replace it; that older FAQ should not be treated as proof of the exact wording in the 2026 agreement. What Reuters reported about the 2027 Draft
Reuters reported on August 24, 2026, citing unnamed league sources, that Kanter Freedom and Royce White were considered ineligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft. That is attributed reporting, not a publicly documented league ruling in the sources cited here. Reuters also reported that the WNBA did not then have a specific publicly available transgender participation policy. Neither point supplies the text of the 2026 CBA or establishes the league’s current formal determination. Read the Reuters report.

The WNBA’s official 2026 rulebook page covers rules of basketball. It is separate from the CBA provisions governing employment and draft eligibility, so a game rulebook cannot answer the eligibility question. The league’s page is titled 2026 Official WNBA Rulebook.
