President Donald Trump met Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan at the White House on Aug. 11, 2025, four days after publicly demanding that Tan resign. Afterward, Trump praised Tan’s career and said follow-up suggestions would be developed. The meeting eased the immediate confrontation, but the public accounts did not announce a finalized agreement.
Why did Trump call for Tan to resign?
On Aug. 7, 2025, Trump posted that Intel’s CEO was “highly CONFLICTED” and “must resign, immediately,” as ABC News reported. The demand followed concerns about Tan’s reported investments and ties to Chinese technology companies.
Reuters reported that Tan had invested at least $200 million in hundreds of Chinese firms, some linked to the Chinese military. That reporting was background to the controversy; it does not establish that Tan broke the law. The White House meeting accounts likewise do not settle the legality of those investments.
What happened at the White House meeting?
On Aug. 11, Tan met Trump at the White House alongside Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trump described the meeting as “a very interesting one,” according to Reuters.

In a post after the meeting, Trump wrote: “His success and rise is an amazing story.” He also said Tan and Cabinet members would develop suggestions over the following week, as reported by CNBC.
Intel’s own account characterized the discussion as “candid and constructive” and said it concerned the company’s commitment to strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership. The company’s Aug. 11 statement did not announce a specific agreement or describe its terms.

Did Trump reverse his demand?
The meeting marked a shift in Trump’s public tone: he moved from demanding Tan’s immediate resignation to praising him afterward. The Associated Press reported on Aug. 12 that Trump had backed away from the demand after meeting Tan and was praising the CEO’s career. That supports describing the immediate confrontation as softened, rather than claiming that the meeting produced a documented formal reversal or a negotiated settlement.
The accounts published about the meeting describe discussion and planned follow-up suggestions, not a finalized deal. Any later government investment, subsidy, or manufacturing announcement is a separate development and should not be treated as an outcome agreed at the Aug. 11 meeting.
