Donald Trump’s August 2026 transaction report lists a Meta stock purchase valued in the $5,000,001–$25,000,000 range and a SpaceX senior unsecured note purchase valued in the $1,000,001–$5,000,000 range. The filing gives ranges, not exact amounts. It records the SpaceX debt purchase on August 18; Trump signed a national space transportation policy on August 20. That sequence is documented, but it does not establish a connection between the trade and the policy.
What the filing says about Meta and SpaceX
The U.S. Office of Government Ethics (OGE) Form 278-T identifies Trump as president and records the two transactions by date, type, and value band. OGE received the report on September 25, 2026. The filing does not state the precise dollar amount paid for either position.
| Reported transaction | Date | Value reported | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Platforms stock purchase | August 21, 2026 | $5,000,001–$25,000,000 | Equity (stock); the exact purchase amount is not disclosed. OGE Form 278-T |
| SpaceX senior unsecured note purchase | August 18, 2026 | $1,000,001–$5,000,000 | Company debt, not SpaceX stock. The filing lists 5.35% interest and maturity in July 2031. OGE Form 278-T |
The distinction matters: Meta is reported as stock, while the SpaceX entry is a note—a debt instrument. The filing’s value bands also mean that “up to $25 million” is not a reported exact amount; the disclosed range begins just above $5 million.
Why the August 20 space policy drew attention
Trump signed a national space transportation policy on August 20, two days after the SpaceX note transaction reported for August 18. Quartz and TipRanks summarized the policy as seeking more than 1,000 launches and reentries annually by 2030 and directing federal agencies to make government launch facilities more available to commercial users. Quartz’s account and TipRanks’ summary provide those policy details; the primary policy text is not cited here.

SpaceX provides launch services, so the policy’s subject and the reported debt purchase are relevant context. But the filing and the date sequence do not show that the purchase influenced the policy, that the policy was tailored to SpaceX, or that SpaceX benefited from any particular provision. Timing alone cannot establish motive, influence, causation, or a legal violation.
How much activity did the August report disclose?
The report contains 517 transactions. CNBC’s analysis, as reported by Quartz, estimated their combined value at approximately $74.3 million–$273.3 million. That broad total is an estimate derived from the filing’s dollar ranges; it is not an exact total stated by OGE. Quartz reports CNBC’s calculation.

An OGE periodic transaction report is a public disclosure of reported financial activity, not a finding that a transaction was improper. These entries alone do not prove a conflict of interest, illegal conduct, a quid pro quo, or a particular investment rationale. Establishing any such conclusion would require evidence beyond the transaction dates and value ranges.

Quartz reports that Trump’s assets are held in a trust administered by Donald Trump Jr. and that the White House has described independent advisers managing accounts without Trump’s input. Those are reported descriptions of the broader arrangement, not details that resolve who selected these particular trades or what control Trump exercised over them. The OGE transaction form itself does not answer those questions. Quartz’s report.
