FDA records show that True Indicating’s InstaTRU Instant Biological Indicator for Steam (IBI-05) received a 510(k) substantial-equivalence decision on June 18, 2026. FDA describes the device for routine monitoring of steam sterilization efficacy and processed loads, with visual confirmation in 20 seconds. The agency’s indications also specify compatible cycle conditions and exclude sterilizer qualification testing.
What is InstaTRU?
InstaTRU IBI-05 is a biological indicator intended to monitor steam sterilization. The FDA record identifies the applicant as True Indicating, LLC, classifies the device as “Biological Sterilization Indicator With Indirect Growth Detection,” and lists product code QVB, with subsequent product code FRC. The indications document says the indicator is inoculated with a minimum of 105 viable Geobacillus stearothermophilus bacterial spores. FDA’s K251559 record and associated documents identify its intended monitoring use.
FDA describes IBI-05 as intended for routine monitoring of the efficacy of steam sterilization processes and for monitoring processed loads, providing visual confirmation in 20 seconds. A biological indicator is one part of a sterilization monitoring program; the FDA’s general guidance distinguishes biological indicators from chemical indicators, which serve different monitoring roles. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the full procedures applicable to a facility and sterilizer.
What does FDA clearance of InstaTRU mean?
FDA’s 510(k) database records a “Substantially Equivalent (SESE)” decision for K251559 dated June 18, 2026. This is a 510(k) substantial-equivalence decision, commonly described as clearance. It is not FDA certification of individual sterilization loads, a guarantee that a load is sterile, or an endorsement of the product. FDA’s general biological-indicator guidance says biological indicators intended to monitor sterilizers used in healthcare facilities are Class II medical devices requiring premarket notification; the K251559 record is the source for this specific decision. How quickly does the InstaTRU biological indicator give a result?
The FDA indications document states that IBI-05 provides visual confirmation in 20 seconds. True Indicating’s product page also describes results in 20 seconds and says no special reader or incubator is required. Because that manufacturer page refers to multiple product offerings, check the model-specific IBI-05 labeling to confirm which equipment and handling details apply to this device. Can InstaTRU be used for sterilizer qualification testing?
No. The FDA indications document says IBI-05 is “not recommended and should not be used for qualification testing purposes.” Its stated intended use is routine monitoring of sterilization efficacy and processed loads, not qualification testing. Follow the relevant sterilizer and facility procedures for qualification activities.
