Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha called on Tripura University to build stronger industry-academia ties and expand interdisciplinary research, innovation and academic partnerships, saying it should connect knowledge with society’s needs. He made the appeal at the university’s 40th foundation-day programme on 2 October 2026. The call describes an ambition, not proof that the university has already become a regional research hub.
What did Manik Saha say?
Saha urged the university to strengthen links between research and practical needs. Hindustan Times reported him saying: “A university must not create only knowledge; it must also connect the knowledge with the needs of society.”
He also encouraged “stronger industry, academia collaboration, interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurship, innovation, national and international academic partnership.” The programme took place on 2 October 2026; the university’s official website also lists a foundation-day celebration on that date.
Why does he want the university to become a research hub?
The stated goal is to make research more connected to society and to encourage collaboration across disciplines, industry and academic institutions. Saha also described the Tripura government as committed to expanding access to quality higher education and bringing opportunities closer to young people. Hindustan Times reported that he linked growth in the state’s higher-education sector to the establishment of degree colleges since 2018, but his remarks as reported did not give a college count or an independent measure of that growth.

Is Tripura University already a research hub?
The available information supports describing “research hub” as Saha’s aspiration, not as an established status or ranking. Tripura University describes its research and development work as spanning sciences, social sciences, humanities, management, education and allied fields. Which institutions signed MoUs with Tripura University?
Hindustan Times reported that the university signed memoranda of understanding with five academic institutions at the foundation-day event. Its accessible article names four: Assam University, Devi Ahilya Viswavidyalaya, Pahle India Foundation and Bandhan Trust. It does not identify the fifth institution. The university pages reviewed confirm the event date but do not independently verify the agreements or list the signatories, so the reported MoUs should be understood as news-report attribution.

According to its official website, it began in 1976 as the postgraduate wing of Calcutta University, became a state university in 1987 and gained Central University status in 2007. Hindustan Times identifies 2 October 1987 as its establishment date and also reports the 2007 status change.
