Travis Willingham is reportedly taking over the voice of Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. According to Kenneth Shepard’s report on Kotaku, published October 8, 2026, Willingham replaces Tyler Hoechlin, who stepped down because of scheduling conflicts. Willingham’s stated approach is to build the character around restraint: Sephiroth should be menacing without raising his voice, and his main reference point is the Japanese performance of Toshiyuki Morikawa.
What Kotaku reports about the casting
The news comes from a panel at New York City Comic-Con, where the cast of Final Fantasy VII Revelation reportedly discussed the Remake trilogy. Kotaku reports that Willingham joins at the trilogy’s final chapter and that Hoechlin’s exit was due to scheduling conflicts. That explanation is Kotaku’s reporting. It has not been confirmed by an official Square Enix announcement, and this article does not add any detail beyond what Kotaku published.
Why Morikawa is the reference point
Willingham’s most specific comment concerns Toshiyuki Morikawa, the long-time Japanese voice actor who performed Sephiroth. Willingham called Morikawa his “North Star” for the role and said: “the North Star of the voice of Sephiroth is always gonna be Morikawa-san.” He singled out two registers in Morikawa’s work: a voice that sounds “light and alluring,” and one that becomes “very dangerous and menacing.” For Willingham, those shifts are what make Sephiroth ambiguous, a character whose charm and threat sit close together.
Control as the core of the performance
Willingham also relayed a note from voice director Kirk Thornton, who sees Sephiroth as always in command. In Willingham’s words, Thornton’s view is: “He always feels like he’s in control of every situation. There’s nothing that’s gonna confuse him or surprise him.”

- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
Willingham then described his own preference for a villain who does not need volume to dominate a scene. His line, as Kotaku quotes it: “There is always, to me, nothing more dangerous than the villain in the room that doesn’t need to shout to be heard.” In practice, that points to a Sephiroth who stays calm and deliberate, letting tension come from what he withholds rather than from loud delivery.
Where the role sits in the game
- Placement: Kotaku describes Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the final chapter of the Remake trilogy, so Willingham’s Sephiroth belongs to the story’s closing stretch.
- Other casting: The same report says Marisha Ray joins Matt Mercer as Polydroid Shiva, a non-player character.
- Launch date: Kotaku states the game launches on April 8. The report as reproduced does not give a year, so no year should be assumed from this article alone. Check an official Square Enix announcement for the release year.
What is and is not established
- Reported by Kotaku: Willingham is taking over as Sephiroth; Hoechlin left due to scheduling conflicts; Willingham named Morikawa as his reference point; Willingham and Thornton describe the character as controlled and quietly dangerous.
- Not confirmed here: the casting itself beyond Kotaku’s report, the specific cause of Hoechlin’s departure beyond the stated scheduling conflicts, and the launch year.
Readers who want the performance context should treat Willingham’s comments as his own description of his approach, and the scheduling explanation as Kotaku’s account.
