For U.S. TSA screening, keep larger electronics easy to reach, follow the instructions for your lane, and pack fragile or expensive devices in your carry-on. Put spare lithium batteries and power banks in your carry-on—not checked luggage—and charge your devices before you leave in case an officer asks you to turn one on.
Do you have to take your laptop out at airport security?
At standard TSA screening, travelers are instructed to remove personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone from carry-on bags and place them in a bin with nothing above or below them. TSA lists laptops, tablets, e-readers, and handheld game consoles as examples. TSA’s May 2024 standard-screening checklist also advises packing large electronics on the top layer of your bag so they are accessible.
Screening lanes and instructions can differ. Follow the signs and directions from officers at your checkpoint; TSA says the final decision about whether an item is allowed rests with the officer. An item may also receive additional screening or be disallowed because of an alarm or other security concern.

Keep fragile or expensive devices in your carry-on
TSA says electronics may be packed in carry-on or checked baggage, but recommends carrying fragile or expensive devices with you. Keep larger devices near the top of your bag, where you can take them out without rummaging through other belongings.

Keep cables and small accessories organized
TSA advises travelers to organize carry-on bags and keep them uncluttered to facilitate screening. Grouping cables and small accessories in a pouch is one practical way to keep them from burying a laptop or tablet; it is an optional packing aid, not a TSA requirement or a guarantee of faster screening.
Use a TSA-recognized lock if you lock a checked bag
If you choose to lock checked luggage, TSA’s checklist advises looking for a TSA-recognized lock. That is a baggage-lock recommendation, not a guarantee that electronics in a checked bag will be protected from loss, damage, or theft.

Can you pack a power bank in checked luggage?
No. TSA’s published item guidance says spare lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries—including power banks—must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Its guidance lists a 100 Wh limit for ordinary spare lithium-ion batteries and says airline approval is required for specified larger spare batteries. If you are traveling with an unusually large battery or special equipment, check current airline and FAA guidance before departure.

Will TSA make you turn on your phone or other device?
TSA says officers may ask you to power on an electronic device. A device that cannot be powered on will not be permitted onboard, so charge your phone, laptop, tablet, and other essential electronics before traveling and keep them accessible.

Does TSA read or copy information on your devices?
In the cited checkpoint guidance, TSA says it does not read or copy information from devices. That statement is specific to TSA guidance; it should not be assumed to describe procedures at airports in other countries or actions by other authorities.

- Charge devices in case an officer asks you to power one on.
- Place large electronics near the top of your carry-on for access.
- Be ready to remove devices larger than a cell phone if your lane’s instructions require it.
- Pack spare lithium batteries and power banks in your carry-on.
- Follow posted instructions and directions from checkpoint officers.
