Travel insurance for a tropical island trip may cover eligible cancellation or interruption costs, emergency medical treatment, and medical evacuation—but these are separate benefits, and none is guaranteed by the label “comprehensive.” Cyclone claims and activities such as scuba diving also depend on the policy’s wording, exclusions, and timing. Check the contract for your exact itinerary and plans before you buy.

What does travel insurance cover?

Coverage depends on the policy. Three benefits are especially important to distinguish: cancellation or interruption, travel medical treatment, and emergency medical evacuation. One does not automatically include the others. The U.S. Department of State traveler checklist and the CDC travel insurance guidance describe these as separate considerations.

Cancellation and trip interruption

These benefits may reimburse eligible prepaid costs or changes when a stated covered reason applies. They generally do not pay for medical treatment abroad. Before relying on them, check the covered reasons, exclusions, documentation requirements, supplier-failure terms, and when coverage must be purchased. Cancellation and interruption can have different rules.

Emergency medical treatment

A policy may cover emergency treatment for an illness or injury abroad, but the scope and limits vary. Check whether private hospitals, state hospitals, or both are covered; how bills are paid; the benefit limit and deductible or excess; whether the insurer must authorize treatment first; and how the policy treats pre-existing or pending conditions. Also check whether your existing health plan provides any overseas coverage.

Medical evacuation and repatriation

Medical treatment cover is not the same as emergency transport to an appropriate facility or medically necessary transport home. Verify what the policy defines as an evacuation, who decides and authorizes it, where it can take you, what limits apply, and how to reach assistance. For higher-risk destinations or places with limited care, the State Department says evacuation insurance is worth considering. Its adventure-travel guidance gives a general possible evacuation cost of more than $100,000 (U.S. Department of State, 2025); that is not an estimate for any particular island. The agency states: “We strongly suggest that travelers get medical evacuation insurance.”

Other possible benefits

Some policies may address baggage, travel delays, or emergency accommodation. The benefit table—not the policy’s marketing label—determines whether a particular expense is covered and what limit or conditions apply.

Does travel insurance cover hurricanes or cyclones?

There is no universal answer. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) notes that some policies provide only limited cover for losses caused by natural disasters, including tropical cyclones. A government’s general guidance does not establish a single claim trigger for all insurers.

Check the policy’s definition of a covered storm or natural disaster, when cover begins, whether a storm or warning was already known when you bought the policy, and which extra costs are eligible. Confirm separately how cancellation and interruption are treated. Do not assume a hurricane-related loss is covered just because the trip is insured.

Is scuba diving covered by travel insurance?

Coverage for scuba diving—and for snorkeling, sailing, jet skiing, hiking, or other planned activities—depends on the exact policy and the activity’s conditions. Policies may exclude or restrict activities they classify as dangerous or adventurous; an add-on or specialist cover may be needed. Check the activity by name, including any stated depth, certification, supervision, or other conditions. Do not infer coverage from a general reference to adventure or water sports.

What to check for a tropical island itinerary

An island trip can involve remote locations or long transfers, but the destination label alone does not establish what medical care is available. Use the itinerary and your own plans to check the following details in the policy and with the insurer:

  • Medical care: Emergency treatment limits, covered hospital types, bill-payment arrangements, deductibles or excesses, and prior-authorization rules.
  • Transport and assistance: Evacuation and repatriation limits, covered transport—including ambulance, boat, or air transport if relevant—authorization requirements, the 24-hour assistance number, and the process for contacting it.
  • Places and dates: Every island and transit country, exact trip dates, maximum trip duration, and any destination, age, or other eligibility restrictions.
  • Health conditions: How existing or pending conditions must be disclosed and whether they are eligible for cover. FCDO warns that failing to declare relevant conditions may invalidate cover.
  • Activities: Each activity you plan to do and any limits, exclusions, or add-ons that apply.
  • Disruption and costs: Cancellation and interruption reasons, natural-disaster triggers, known-event restrictions, documentation rules, excess or deductible, and exclusions.

How to compare policies without overlooking exclusions

  1. Map your trip: List every destination and transit point, the travel dates, and the activities you plan to do.
  2. Separate the benefits: Compare emergency medical treatment, evacuation or repatriation, and cancellation or interruption as distinct coverages. Do not assume a high limit in one applies to another.
  3. Read the conditions: Check limits, deductibles or excesses, exclusions, prior-authorization requirements, covered reasons, and documentation rules in the policy wording and benefit table.
  4. Ask about uncertainties before purchase: Contact the insurer about unclear storm, activity, condition, transport, or destination terms. Confirm answers against the actual policy rather than relying on a product label.
  5. Save the emergency details: Keep the assistance number and policy information accessible while travelling, and know how the insurer requires you to arrange treatment or transport.

FCDO advises: “If you’re travelling abroad, you should take out appropriate travel insurance before you go.” Its guidance gives illustrative uninsured costs of £25,000+ for a broken leg requiring treatment and possible evacuation or repatriation in Spain, and £80,000+ for a quad-bike accident in Greece requiring surgery and evacuation or repatriation. These are examples in UK government guidance, not tropical-island cost estimates.
