In a Chrome Manifest V3 extension, capture the active tab after a user action, pass its stream ID from the service worker to an offscreen document, and process the resulting audio there. That gives you one browser audio capture—not necessarily one cloud stream or one service. For translated captions, the dependable design is streaming speech recognition followed by text translation, unless your chosen provider explicitly documents speech recognition and translation together in one stream.
How MV3 tab-audio capture works
Chrome’s documented flow separates extension coordination from media processing. The service worker responds to a user action and requests a tab-capture stream ID; an offscreen document uses that ID with getUserMedia() to obtain the actual MediaStream. Chrome documents this worker-to-offscreen pattern from Chrome 116 onward. See Chrome’s tab-capture guidance and the tabCapture API reference.
- User starts capture: Make capture an explicit action, such as clicking the extension’s action. Chrome’s tab-capture API requires the
tabCapturepermission and a user invocation. - Service worker requests an ID: Call
chrome.tabCapture.getMediaStreamId({targetTabId})for the target tab and send the returned ID to the offscreen document. - Offscreen document obtains audio: Use
getUserMedia()with the tab media-source constraints and the stream ID. Keep the resulting stream and media processing in this document; the service worker coordinates but cannot access media streams directly. - Feed playback and processing: Route the captured audio to the user’s output and to the recognition path as needed. If capture has interrupted normal playback, Chrome’s example uses an
AudioContextand connects aMediaStreamAudioSourceNodefrom the captured stream to the audio destination so the tab remains audible. - Make capture state clear: Show when capture is active and provide a user-controlled way to stop it. Stop the media tracks and clean up audio-processing resources when capture ends.
One captured stream is not the same as one provider stream
The browser layer and the speech-and-translation layer are separate architectural choices. A single captured MediaStream can be the audio source for your processing pipeline, but that fact does not establish that the remote provider accepts one stream for both recognition and translation. Nor does it establish whether your extension can connect to that provider directly.

Do not choose a service architecture based only on the word “streaming.” Confirm the selected vendor’s current API capabilities and client protocol. In particular, the reviewed Google API uses gRPC; its documentation does not establish direct compatibility with an extension page’s transport, so a backend or intermediary may be needed.
Design captions for provisional recognition results
Streaming recognition can return interim hypotheses before a segment is final. Those words may change; a final result marks the last recognition result for that portion. Google describes this distinction in its streaming recognition documentation.

- Render interim text as provisional—for example, with a lighter style or an “in progress” treatment.
- Replace or revise that text when a later interim hypothesis arrives; do not append every hypothesis as though it were a new, settled sentence.
- Commit a segment to the stable caption history only when its final result arrives.
- Translate in a way that follows the recognizer’s revisions. If provisional text is translated immediately, update or replace the translation when its source hypothesis changes.
Practical architecture for translated captions
For a provider that documents streaming recognition but not combined speech translation, use this pipeline:
- Capture: The user starts tab capture; the service worker obtains the stream ID and the offscreen document turns it into a media stream.
- Audio routing: Keep playback audible by routing captured audio to the output while also supplying audio to the recognition path.
- Recognition: Send audio using the provider’s supported streaming protocol, with a backend or intermediary if needed.
- Transcript handling: Track interim hypotheses as changeable and final results as committed segments.
- Translation: Translate recognized text, updating translations when the underlying interim transcript changes if you display interim translations.
- Caption display: Show the translated text with a clear distinction between provisional and finalized captions, and stop capture when the user ends the session.
This arrangement uses one browser capture and a recognition stream, but translation is a subsequent text-processing step. A truly combined stream is an option only when the selected provider’s official documentation says it supports that workflow.
