The Tracksmith Eliot Ryder is a max-cushion road trainer built for easy miles, long runs at a conversational pace, and recovery days. Reviewers consistently describe its cushioning and rebound as its main strengths. Its weight and relatively soft forefoot make it a weaker choice for faster workouts, and it is a better fit for runners who want a plush, casual-looking daily shoe than for those who want a light, quick all-rounder.
What the Eliot Ryder is built for
The Ryder sits at the high-cushion end of Tracksmith’s road lineup. Its large midsole is the defining feature, and the upper is styled closer to a casual sneaker than a typical technical trainer. That design choice shapes who will like it. A shoe with this much foam is more comfortable at moderate speeds than at race or interval pace, and most of the reviews below reach that same conclusion from different test conditions.
Specifications: which numbers to trust
Published and measured figures for the Ryder do not fully match, so the source and the tested size matter when you compare numbers. The table lists each value with its origin.
| Measure | Value | Source and basis |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 9.5 oz for men’s M9 / women’s W11 | Tracksmith product page (accessed 2026), listed figure |
| Weight | 280.0 g (9.88 oz) | RTINGS, 2026, measured on a men’s US 9 pair |
| Stack height | 45 mm | Tracksmith product page, listed; Runner’s World, 2026, describes a 45 mm trainer |
| Heel stack | 44.3 mm | RTINGS, 2026, measured |
| Forefoot stack | 35.2 mm | RTINGS, 2026, measured |
| Drop | 7 mm | Tracksmith product page, listed |
| Drop | 7.5 mm | RTINGS, 2026, advertised figure |
| Drop | 9.1 mm | RTINGS, 2026, measured heel-to-toe on a men’s US 9 pair |
| Midsole | 25 mm A-TPU drop-in midsole | Runner’s World, 2026 |
| Price | $220 | Believe in the Run, at the time of its July 15, 2026 review; not a guaranteed current price |
The gap between the 7 mm listed drop and the 9.1 mm measured drop is the most important discrepancy. RTINGS measured a heel stack of 44.3 mm and a forefoot stack of 35.2 mm, which produces the higher drop. If a heel-to-toe difference matters for your training or for a transition from another shoe, check the drop on the specific pair you plan to buy rather than relying on the listed figure.

Cushioning and ride
Comfort is where the Ryder earns its reputation. RTINGS reports strong impact protection under both the heel and forefoot and says the cushioning holds up over longer efforts. Believe in the Run describes it as a max-cushion shoe intended for easy, long, and recovery runs. Runner’s World reports that the large A-TPU midsole becomes responsive after break-in, which suggests the ride firms up or livens somewhat once the foam settles.
The same softness has a cost. RTINGS says the shoe’s weight and relatively soft forefoot limit quick turnover and snap, so the foot does not get the same push-off feel that a firmer, lighter trainer provides.
Can you run fast in the Eliot Ryder?
The reviews agree on a clear distinction: the Ryder is capable at sustained moderate effort and less suitable as a speed-focused shoe. Runner’s World found it capable on mid-distance and longer runs after break-in. RTINGS concluded it works better for relaxed mileage than for fast running. These two findings are compatible rather than contradictory.

Daily easy running
This is the Ryder’s strongest use. A plush, forgiving platform suits steady mileage where the goal is accumulating time on feet rather than improving split times.
Long runs
Runner’s World found the shoe capable on longer runs once broken in, and RTINGS says the cushioning holds up on longer efforts. Long runs at a comfortable, conversational effort fit the shoe’s design well.
Recovery days
Believe in the Run positions the shoe for recovery runs, and the cushioning and weight profile suit that use. The trade-off is that you give up some of the responsiveness you would want on faster sessions.

Tempo, intervals, and race pace
This is where the Ryder is least suitable. Its weight and softer forefoot limit the pace-changing snap that faster work demands. If your training includes regular quality sessions, a lighter trainer with more stride assistance will serve you better.

Fit
RTINGS reports true-to-size length, a roomy forefoot and arch, and ample toe-box height. For most runners who want room in the front of the shoe, that is a favorable profile.
Narrow ankles and heel security
Runner’s World cautions that runners with narrow ankles may get better heel hold from heel-lock lacing, or may prefer the slimmer Eliot Runner instead. This is the main fit caveat in the evidence. If your heel lifts in other shoes, test the Ryder with heel-lock lacing before committing.

Width options and sizing guidance
RTINGS’ listing indicates the Ryder does not come in wide sizing. Runners who need a wider fit should look at other models. Tracksmith’s product page contains a fit line that names the Eliot Runner rather than the Ryder, so do not treat that sentence as Ryder-specific sizing guidance. Confirm current size advice with Tracksmith before ordering, especially if you are between sizes.
Weather and breathability
The reviews disagree here, and the difference appears to reflect test conditions. In its testing, RTINGS found the upper breathed poorly and took a long time to dry. Runner’s World reports that the upper did not overheat during its reviewer’s runs in humid Northeast conditions. The upper uses a woven construction with suede overlays, as described in review coverage. If you run in hot or humid weather, the RTINGS result is the more cautious reading to plan around, and the Runner’s World result is one reviewer’s experience in one climate.

| Shoe | How RTINGS describes it relative to the Ryder | Weight figure |
|---|---|---|
| Tracksmith Eliot Ryder | Max-cushion ride, strong impact protection, better suited to relaxed mileage than fast running | 280.0 g measured (men’s US 9) |
| ASICS Superblast 3 | Lighter and more performance-oriented than the Ryder | Not stated in the review evidence reviewed here |
| On Cloudmonster 3 Hyper | Lighter, more stable, and smoother through the stride than the Ryder | Not stated in the review evidence reviewed here |
If performance versatility matters more to you than a cushioned ride and a casual look, these two alternatives are the comparisons RTINGS draws. Choose based on the axes that matter for your training: cushioning, weight, fit and width, stride assistance, intended pace, and weather performance.
Who should buy the Eliot Ryder
The Ryder is a good fit if you want a plush daily trainer for easy and long miles, value a comfortable ride over speed, and like a shoe that can be worn casually. It is less compelling if you need a lighter, quicker shoe for tempo sessions and intervals, if you run in hot and humid conditions where breathability matters, or if you have narrow ankles and need a secure heel without testing lacing options first.
Before you buy
- Confirm the current price. Believe in the Run listed the shoe at $220 when it published its review on July 15, 2026, and prices change.
- Check stock and size and color availability on the retailer’s page at purchase time.
- Read the retailer’s return terms, since a shoe that feels too firm, too soft, or too warm may need to go back.
- Test the heel hold with your usual lacing before committing to a long run in the shoe.
