The receiving site may approve, reject, or hide that notice. In WordPress’s documentation, this is different from a pingback, which is triggered automatically by a link and sends no excerpt.
What trackback content referencing means
A TrackBack is a way for one blog to tell another blog, “I referenced your post.” It links posts across sites and can provide context through an excerpt, rather than merely indicating that a link exists. WordPress describes TrackBacks as a way to notify legacy blog systems that you have linked to them.
TrackBacks could also connect categories, not just individual entries. In the documented Movable Type model, a receiving category could gather links about a subject, and a publishing category could notify registered remote TrackBack URLs when a new post appeared. Movable Type’s specification describes embedded RDF as a way to discover TrackBack endpoints and build threaded discussions across weblogs: Movable Type TrackBack developer guide.
TrackBack vs. pingback
| How they differ | TrackBack | Pingback |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts in WordPress | Manually: the author sends a notification to the target post’s TrackBack URI. | Automatically when a post links to a pingback-enabled post. |
| What is sent | A notification with an excerpt of the content. | No content excerpt; the source is checked separately. |
| Verification described in WordPress developer documentation | The source URL, title, and excerpt arrive as request data and are not verified by checking the source page. | The receiving site fetches the source page and checks that it links to the target. |
| Display | The receiving site can choose not to display the TrackBack. | The notification appears as a comment that the recipient can moderate. |
These are the distinctions in WordPress’s documentation, not a guarantee that every platform implements either mechanism the same way. WordPress’s user guide summarizes TrackBacks as manual and excerpt-bearing, while pingbacks are automatic and carry no content: WordPress: Trackbacks and Pingbacks.

How to send a TrackBack in WordPress
WordPress documents this manual workflow for the classic editor. You need the target post’s TrackBack URI, which on a WordPress site ends in /trackback/.
- Get the target URI. Find the TrackBack URI for the post you referenced. If the target is a WordPress post, its URI ends in
/trackback/. - Open the Send Trackbacks module. In the classic editor, locate the module below the post editor. If it is not visible, check the editor’s screen options.
- Paste the URI and publish. Enter the target URI in the module and publish your post. WordPress sends the TrackBack notification.
Sending it does not ensure that readers will see it: the receiving site may decide not to display the TrackBack. The WordPress instructions describe the classic-editor workflow; they do not establish that the same controls are available in every editor or on every blogging platform.

What a TrackBack request can contain
Movable Type’s manual documents one implementation in which a TrackBack ping is an HTTP GET request to a unique TrackBack item URL. Its fields are title, excerpt, url, and blog_name. In that implementation, excerpts longer than 255 characters are cut to 252 characters followed by .... The documented response is XML with an error indicator; when the request fails, the response also includes a message. These are details of Movable Type’s documented behavior, not universal requirements for all TrackBack systems: Movable Type TrackBack manual.
Moderation, spam, and disabled TrackBacks in WordPress
TrackBacks are handled within WordPress’s discussion and comment system. Administrators can allow or decline incoming link notifications and use comment controls such as a moderation list and a threshold for the number of links in a comment. These settings affect whether notifications are accepted or held for review; they do not make unverified TrackBack details trustworthy. WordPress’s developer reference says TrackBack source URLs, titles, and excerpts are unverified request data, whereas a pingback’s source page is fetched and checked for the target link. That difference is a moderation risk, not a claim about every platform’s implementation: WordPress developer reference: trackback().

“I have disabled trackbacks, but trackbacks continue to be posted”
In WordPress, turning off the global setting generally affects future posts; it does not necessarily disable pings on posts that already exist. Check the individual older posts and disable pings in each post’s discussion settings. WordPress also documents a database-level method, but changing the database directly carries more risk; use the per-post setting unless you are comfortable administering WordPress databases. See WordPress: Enable or Disable Comments for the documented controls.
WordPress’s developer reference records a version-specific change: same-site pingbacks are no longer held for moderation starting in WordPress 7.1.0. Because moderation behavior can change between releases, check the reference for the version you run before relying on that detail.

Is TrackBack still supported everywhere?
No broad claim about current cross-platform support or how commonly TrackBacks are used follows from the documentation described here. WordPress documents a manual workflow in its classic editor, while Movable Type’s manual supplies a detailed implementation example. If you need to reference another site, check whether it provides a TrackBack URI and accepts incoming notifications; a link in your post does not guarantee that the other site supports TrackBacks or will publish the notice.
