To set up a TP-Link Wi-Fi extender, connect it to your router using the Tether app, a browser, or WPS, then move it to a location where it can still receive a strong signal from the router. Start setup near the router, and use the router’s Wi-Fi password—not the extender’s management password—to join the two devices.
Before you start: check the model and place the extender near the router
Find the extender’s model number and hardware version on its label, then use the matching TP-Link support page or user guide. Setup steps, indicator lights, Tether compatibility, and reset timing can differ by model and revision. TP-Link documents Tether, browser management, and WPS as common setup routes; WPS is only an option when both the extender and router support it. See the RE215/RE315 V1 user guide for an example of model-specific instructions.
Plug the extender into an outlet close to the router and wait for its Power LED to become solid. For Tether setup, TP-Link’s guide specifies keeping it within 10 feet of the router; its troubleshooting guidance recommends within 16 feet if the extender cannot find or connect to the router. Keep the device upright if its manual requires that orientation. You will need the router’s Wi-Fi password to connect the extender to the home network.

| Method | Useful when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Tether app | You want guided setup on a phone. | The extender must support Tether. If discovery fails, join the phone to TP-Link_Extender manually and turn off cellular data. |
| Browser | You prefer a computer or need local management access. | Your device must connect to the extender by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The local management page does not require internet access. |
| WPS | Your router and extender both support WPS and you want to pair them with their buttons. | Pair within the router’s WPS window. Some dual-band setups require a second pairing; switch to app or browser setup if WPS fails. |
Set up the extender with the Tether app
- Install TP-Link Tether if your model supports it, open the app, tap the plus sign, and choose Add a Range Extender. Follow the app’s prompts to sign in if asked.
- With the extender powered on near the router, wait for the Power LED to turn solid and follow the app instructions to connect to it. If the app cannot find it, open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, join TP-Link_Extender, turn off cellular data, and return to Tether.
- Create the extender’s management password when prompted. This password is for managing the extender; it is not the router’s Wi-Fi password.
- Select the router’s 5 GHz network if it is available, enter the router’s Wi-Fi password, and repeat for 2.4 GHz if the app requests it. Check the network names and password before confirming. TP-Link’s current guide says applying these settings takes 1–2 minutes.
- After setup completes, relocate the extender about halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area, while keeping it within the router’s range. In the cited guide, a solid blue Signal LED indicates success; a red signal means move the extender closer to the router.
- Connect phones and other devices to the extended network using the network name and password displayed in the app.
See TP-Link’s Tether setup guide for app-specific prompts and indicators.

Set up the extender in a browser
- Connect a phone or computer to the extender’s Wi-Fi network. If your model supports it, you can instead connect by Ethernet.
- Open tplinkrepeater.net in a browser. On a factory-default extender, TP-Link also documents 192.168.0.254 as the default IP address. The address or login behavior can differ once the extender has joined the router.
- Create or enter the extender’s management password, then follow the Quick Setup Wizard.
- Choose your router’s Wi-Fi network and enter the router’s Wi-Fi password. If a dual-band extender asks about both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, configure the bands your router has; skip 5 GHz if the router has no 5 GHz network.
- Let the extender apply the settings, then check its connection and relocate it toward the weak-coverage area once setup is complete.
The management page is local, so it does not need an internet connection; the device you use must still be connected to the extender. For model-specific screens, consult the corresponding user guide, such as the RE215/RE315 V1 guide.
Set up the extender with WPS
- Confirm that both the router and extender support WPS. Check their manuals for the button and indicator details.
- Press the router’s WPS button first, then press the extender’s WPS button within the router’s pairing window. TP-Link’s general WPS setup guide says the process lasts two minutes.
- Check the extender’s Signal LED or user guide to confirm pairing. With some dual-band routers, you may need to repeat the WPS sequence to pair the other band.
If pairing does not complete, use Tether or browser setup instead. The WPS FAQ was updated in 2022, so follow the manual for your exact model if its steps or indicator behavior differ.

Move the extender to improve coverage
After it joins the router, move it roughly halfway between the router and the area with weak coverage. It must remain within the router’s range: an extender placed in a dead zone cannot receive a reliable signal to extend. Check the signal indicator at the new outlet; if it shows a poor signal, move the extender closer to the router. TP-Link’s setup troubleshooting guide covers placement and signal checks.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The app cannot find the extender
- Connect the phone to the extender’s TP-Link_Extender Wi-Fi network in the phone’s Wi-Fi settings.
- Turn off cellular data and reopen Tether.
- Restart the extender and try discovery again. If it still fails, use browser setup if your model supports it.
The router’s Wi-Fi network does not appear
- Rescan for networks and check that a phone or computer can see the router’s Wi-Fi.
- Move the extender close to the router; TP-Link recommends within 16 feet during troubleshooting, then retry setup.
- Reboot the router and extender. If the router has no 5 GHz network, skip that band in setup.
- TP-Link notes that some DFS or automatic 5 GHz channel configurations can cause instability. Check the router’s documentation before changing its channel settings.
The extender rejects the password or will not connect
- Re-enter the router’s Wi-Fi password, not the extender’s management password.
- Check whether the router has MAC filtering, wireless access control, or an access-control list enabled. TP-Link advises disabling these restrictions for setup and trying again.
- Move the extender closer to the router, rescan for its network, or try a different setup method.
The management page will not load
- Confirm that your phone or computer is connected to the extender by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Try tplinkrepeater.net or, on a factory-default device, 192.168.0.254.
- Restart the extender. If it has joined the router, check the router’s DHCP client list for the extender’s current IP address.
The extender connects but there is no internet
Check that the router itself has internet service and that the extender is still within its Wi-Fi range. If you changed the router’s network name or password, reconnect the extender using the new details. TP-Link explains in its setup troubleshooting guide, “The extender relies on your router for an internet connection.”
You forgot the extender’s management password
TP-Link advises resetting the extender to factory settings and configuring it again. Reset timing varies by model and firmware: its troubleshooting guide describes a one-second press for many units but notes that some earlier firmware versions require holding Reset for about five seconds until the Power LED blinks. Check your model’s manual before resetting; a factory reset removes the existing configuration.
