Toyota announced a nearly $50 million investment in a Michigan battery laboratory in 2023, with operations then expected to begin in 2026. On October 1, 2026, the company announced the opening of the Toyota Battery Center of North America in Saline, Michigan. Toyota describes the 30,000-square-foot facility as a center for developing and evaluating batteries across their lifecycle.
Where is Toyota’s battery testing center?
The Toyota Battery Center of North America (TBC) is in Saline, Michigan, at Toyota’s North American R&D headquarters. Toyota’s October 1, 2026 announcement identifies the facility as open. The 30,000-square-foot figure comes from Toyota’s opening release.
How much is Toyota investing?
Toyota Motor North America announced nearly $50 million for the laboratory on June 8, 2023. The company described that amount as its planned investment to build the lab; it is not an independently audited final construction cost. The 2023 announcement projected that operations would begin in 2026, and Toyota later announced the center’s opening that year.

Toyota describes the center’s work as spanning the battery-development lifecycle, from raw-material sourcing through customer applications and recycling. The opening announcement says teams will assess battery performance and develop technology for several types of vehicles:

The original 2023 announcement described evaluation from battery cell through pack, with the aim of assessing performance, quality, and durability against North American customer requirements.
How does the center connect to Toyota’s North American operations?
Toyota says the center will support its North American manufacturing network. The company specifically named battery evaluation for Toyota Battery Manufacturing in North Carolina and vehicle plants across the continent. The 2023 announcement also identified Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky as a beneficiary.

Toyota’s 2026 release says it is opening research access with the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center so other research partners can benefit. The announcement establishes a research-access relationship; it does not describe a consumer program or a commercial referral offering.
Which capabilities were announced in 2023 but are not confirmed as operational?
Toyota’s 2023 plan included Level 2 and Level 3 charging evaluations, connectivity with power sources and infrastructure, supplier collaboration, and the possibility of expanding the facility as needs change. The 2026 opening announcement does not independently confirm that each of those specific capabilities is already operating, so they are best understood as elements of the original plan rather than verified current services.

The 2023 release also said the facility would be included in Toyota’s enrollment in DTE Energy’s MIGreenPower program. Toyota stated that all its Michigan R&D operations would be able to attribute 100% of electricity use to renewable energy projects starting in 2026. That was an announced arrangement; the cited releases do not verify the center’s current program participation or its actual electricity mix.

The opening establishes that Toyota’s planned Michigan battery laboratory became a named facility in Saline. Toyota presents it as a place to evaluate and develop battery technology for multiple powertrains and to support manufacturing and research. Its executives have described intended benefits such as resolving field concerns more quickly and developing batteries suited to American driving conditions, but the company releases do not report independently measured performance improvements attributable to the center.

The announcements also do not specify battery chemistry, cell specifications, test-equipment models, job totals, or a final audited construction cost. Toyota’s description of more than 50 years of history in Michigan is the company’s characterization.
