The company said 296,019 records may have been exposed, but its investigation did not confirm that anyone accessed them—and could not rule out access.
What happened in Toyota’s T-Connect incident?
In a notice published October 7, 2022, Toyota Motor Corporation said a development subcontractor uploaded part of the T-Connect user-site source code to GitHub with the repository mistakenly set to public. The code contained a key that could access a server storing customer email addresses and customer management numbers. Toyota’s official notice attributes the public repository to the contractor while accepting Toyota’s responsibility for managing customer information.
Toyota said the code had been publicly accessible from December 2017 until September 15, 2022, when the company discovered it and made the GitHub code private. It changed the server access key on September 17, 2022. The exposure concerned source code and access to a customer-data server; Toyota did not report a confirmed intrusion into vehicles.
What information may have been exposed?
Toyota said 296,019 email addresses and customer management numbers may have been accessible. The relevant group was T-Connect user-site customers who registered their email addresses from July 2017. Toyota described the records as potentially exposed; it did not say that all were retrieved by an outside party.

Toyota also said names, phone numbers, and credit-card information were not within the scope of this incident. It said email addresses used for Lexus G-Link/G-Link Lite and MyToyota/MyTOYOTA+ were also outside the scope. These are Toyota’s statements in its incident notice, not independently audited findings.
Did someone access or steal the data?
Toyota said a security investigation found no third-party access in the server logs, but it could not completely rule out access. The company also said it had not confirmed misuse at the time of its notice. In the Japanese notice, Toyota’s account of the investigation says that although investigators could not confirm third-party access from the logs, they could not completely deny the possibility.

That distinction matters: Toyota disclosed a risk that the data could have been accessed, not confirmed theft or a verified misuse event. English-language reporting at the time by SecurityWeek described T-Connect as a website and mobile application with vehicle-management features; the reported exposure was not a claim that attackers had taken control of vehicles.

- Be cautious with messages from unfamiliar or suspicious senders.
- Do not open attachments in suspicious messages; delete those messages.
- Check links carefully and avoid sites that appear to be fake login pages asking for account or password information.
These precautions address the risk of deceptive messages. The incident notice does not establish that every recipient was targeted, nor does it recommend buying a paid security service.

No. Toyota’s May 31, 2023 notice described separate potential exposures related to cloud configuration, including Japanese navigation and map-service data and files from overseas dealer systems. That disclosure concerned different systems and data categories; it should not be combined with the 2022 T-Connect GitHub source-code incident. See Toyota’s 2023 notice.
