Yes—some wellness trends can harm health when they rely on unsupported claims or encourage risky practices. Evidence does not establish that detox diets and cleanses remove toxins or produce lasting weight loss, and risks vary considerably depending on what a cleanse involves. That is a reason to scrutinize particular claims and practices, not to assume that wellness or health-seeking behavior is inherently harmful.
What “detox” and “cleanse” can mean
These labels do not describe one standardized practice. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says programs marketed for detoxification may involve fasting, juice-only diets, eating only certain foods, supplements or herbs, laxatives or enemas, colon cleansing, saunas, or reducing exposure to certain environmental substances. Those approaches do not have identical evidence or risks. NCCIH also distinguishes consumer detox programs from medically indicated chelation used in certain serious cases; the latter is not the same as a routine cleanse.
Because a label can obscure what someone is actually being asked to do, assess the specific regimen—its ingredients, duration, restrictions, and promised outcome—rather than judging it by words such as “natural” or “detox.” NCCIH’s fact sheet on detoxes and cleanses, last updated in March 2025, outlines the different approaches and cautions.
What the evidence says about detox claims
NCCIH reports that only a small number of studies have tested detoxification programs in people, and that those studies have limitations. Some human studies have reported changes in weight or fat loss, insulin resistance, or blood pressure, but NCCIH describes the evidence as low quality because of issues such as study design, small participant numbers, or lack of peer review. A 2015 review found no compelling evidence that detox diets manage weight or eliminate toxins, and there are no studies establishing their long-term effects.

That is not the same as saying no one has studied these programs. It means the available evidence does not establish the advertised benefits. NIH News in Health likewise says high-quality studies are scarce and that the available findings do not support detox diets for weight loss or toxin removal. If a restrictive plan leads to early weight loss, reduced calorie intake may explain it; that loss may reverse when normal eating resumes. NIH News in Health’s December 2021 explainer discusses those limitations.
Risks depend on the practice
Potential harms are not uniform across everything marketed as a cleanse. NCCIH identifies specific concerns:

These risks matter when a promotional claim focuses on a supposed benefit but says little about the regimen’s duration, restrictions, or potential effects. For questions about an individual health condition or a major dietary change, speak with a health care provider. NCCIH specifically advises discussing complementary health approaches, including detoxes and cleanses, with a provider.
Why social-media wellness claims deserve scrutiny
Social-media promotion can make it difficult to judge both the evidence behind a claim and the commercial interests behind a post. A 2024 content analysis by Raffoul and colleagues examined 233 popular U.S. TikTok videos under the hashtags #dietpills, #preworkout, and #detox. The researchers analyzed the most-viewed videos as of June 2022. In that sample, 97% gave no scientific evidence for health- or appearance-related claims, 93.6% did not disclose credentials, and 95.7% did not identify whether the promotion was retailer-sponsored.
Those figures describe that particular historical sample, not all TikTok posts, all creators, or what is currently being published. They do show why a confident presentation or large audience is not a substitute for evidence or clear disclosure. The study appeared in Eating Behaviors in 2024; its abstract is available through PubMed.

How to assess a wellness trend before trying it
- Write down the exact claim. Is the promise toxin removal, lasting weight loss, or another health or appearance outcome? A vague promise is hard to verify; a specific claim can be checked against evidence.
- Look for the quality and quantity of evidence. Ask whether human studies actually tested the specific approach and outcome, and whether the findings are strong enough to support the claim. A small or low-quality study is not proof of a reliable benefit.
- Check what the practice requires. Identify the ingredients, restrictions, duration, and any fasting, laxative use, or colon cleansing involved. Consider the risks associated with the actual practice, not only the claimed benefit.
- Evaluate the promoter and disclosures. Look for relevant credentials and a clear statement about sponsorship or retailer promotion. If either is missing, that does not by itself prove a claim false, but it leaves important context unavailable.
- Ask a health care provider when the stakes are personal. This is especially important if you have a health condition or are considering a major dietary change; a provider can help assess whether the approach is appropriate for your circumstances.
