The Tovala Smart Oven is easiest to recommend if you want its QR-scanned meal workflow, especially for Tovala Meals, and also want a compact oven for everyday cooking. It is less compelling as a precision oven: RTINGS found the standard model toasted well but struggled with stable temperatures, baking, and evenly crisp air-fried food. The Smart Oven Pro adds steam, but the available independent test evidence covers only the standard model.
What the Tovala Smart Oven does
Tovala’s defining feature is not a new cooking method but a connected cooking routine. Scan a Tovala Meal’s QR code and the oven fetches its programmed sequence of modes, temperatures, and times from the cloud. Tovala says its chefs pair meals with model-specific cook cycles. That can reduce the need to interpret a package’s instructions or manually change settings partway through cooking.
The oven is also a conventional countertop appliance. Tovala lists bake, broil, toast, reheat, and air-fry modes on the standard Smart Oven; it supports manual cooking, app recipes, and scans for selected grocery products. The Pro adds steam. The company’s support pages describe more than 1,000 scannable branded groceries, but the catalog and compatibility can change; check the app’s Groceries tab for a specific item.
Wi-Fi and the Tovala app are required for setup and connected features. After setup, basic front-panel modes can be used without Wi-Fi, but Tovala Meal scanning cannot. The app supports Wi-Fi setup, notifications, recipes, custom cycles, and meal ordering.

How the standard oven performed in independent testing
RTINGS published its standard Smart Oven review on February 7, 2025, and updated it September 8, 2026. It gave the oven a 6.0 mixed-use rating. These are RTINGS’ results for its tested unit and procedures, not a guarantee of how every oven or recipe will perform.

If toast and the convenience of automated meal cycles matter most, the findings may be acceptable. If your priority is repeatable baking or crisp, evenly cooked air-fried food, the test results suggest caution. RTINGS tested the standard oven, so these performance findings do not establish how the Pro performs.

Standard Smart Oven vs. Smart Oven Pro
Tovala’s product page listed the standard Smart Oven at $299 and the Pro at $349 when the cited product information was checked. Prices and promotions can change; check Tovala’s current listing before buying. Tovala promoted the standard oven as free with six meal orders over six months and described a 100-day trial with free return shipping for the offer. Read the current offer terms carefully: a conditional meal-order promotion is not the same as an unconditional oven price.

The Pro’s steam mode is its concrete distinction in the listed specifications. Choose it if steam is a mode you expect to use; do not assume the standard model includes steam. The available test does not show that paying more for the Pro improves baking, air-frying, or other results.

Size, setup, and day-to-day use
Tovala’s support specifications give both models external dimensions of 18.5 × 12.32 × 11.75 inches and internal dimensions of 12.75 × 11 × 8 inches. RTINGS measured the standard oven it reviewed at 18.5 inches wide, 14.4 inches deep, and 11.9 inches high. Those figures differ from Tovala’s published depth and height, so allow room based on the actual unit and its ventilation needs rather than treating the measurements as interchangeable.
RTINGS lists a baking tray, wire rack, mesh air-fry basket, oven mitt, external crumb tray, and guides in its reviewed standard-oven package. Box contents can vary by SKU or date, so confirm what is included with the current listing. For air frying, Tovala advises putting the basket above the rack and placing the sheet tray below food likely to drip. Its care guidance says the sheet tray is dishwasher safe and the basket should be hand-washed.

For grocery scans, Tovala advises following the food package’s preparation directions; some products are optimized for the air-fry basket. The scan workflow depends on the supported catalog and connectivity, so it is sensible to verify an item in the app before planning around it.

The oven’s connected convenience is tied to an ongoing meal service, but buying the oven does not mean every cooking task must use Tovala meals. Tovala’s FAQ lists meals from $8.99 per serving, single-serve meals generally at $13.99, and a four-meal weekly minimum box at $55.96 plus tax. It lists shipping at $10.99 per delivery. These are the FAQ’s stated terms and may change.

Tovala says meal plans can be skipped, paused, or canceled, and that it delivers to eligible ZIP codes in the contiguous 48 states, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. Its FAQ states a 100-day return window with free return shipping for ovens bought directly from Tovala. Do not assume the same return terms apply to third-party purchases.
